About Historical Pageant

Every August, Giovinazzo, an Adriatic town north of Bari, relives its ancient history through the Historical Pageant, the heart of the Patronal Feast in honor of Maria Santissima di Corsignano. Over two hundred costumed participants, flag-wavers, and musicians parade through the old town in two grand acts: the 17th-century translation of the Marian icon and the 1188 medieval penitential procession. Organized by the Pro Loco, it is one of the summer's highlights in Giovinazzo, drawing thousands of spectators into the alleys of the old town.

A city reliving its history

The Giovinazzo Historical Pageant is the most cherished historical re-enactment in the summer calendar of the Municipality of Giovinazzo, in the Metropolitan City of Bari, Puglia. Every year, in the heart of August, the village overlooking the Adriatic transforms into an open-air theater: over two hundred costumed figures retrace centuries of local devotion to Maria Santissima di Corsignano, the patron saint of Giovinazzo. The pageant is the most evocative moment of the Patronal Feast and is organized by the Pro Loco Giovinazzo, which involves residents, associations, and guest groups in the staging each year.

Two acts, two eras

The parade is divided into two distinct yet complementary parts that tell the collective memory of the community. The first part, set in the 17th century, commemorates the definitive translation of 1667, when the venerated icon of the Virgin of Corsignano was moved from the hamlet of the same name to the Cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta. The second part, featuring medieval costumes, reconstructs the penitential procession of 1188, during which the population implored the Virgin to end the disastrous drought that plagued the territory.

Participants, trades, and flag-wavers

The charm of the pageant lies in its attention to detail: young maidens with flowers lead the way toward the sacred icon, which is carried on the shoulders of representatives of the city's ancient tradesโ€”farmers, carpenters, blacksmiths, sailors, masons, fishermen, painters, and tailors. Preceding and concluding the parade each year are groups of flag-wavers and musicians, whose performances and drums liven up the squares of the historic center. The most anticipated performances take place in Piazza Sant'Agostino, while the final blessing concludes the evening on the churchyard of San Domenico.

An event that unites faith and community

More than just a re-enactment, the Historical Pageant is an identity ritual that weaves together history, faith, and folklore. Its roots lie in the legend of the crusader who, according to tradition, linked the city's destiny to the Marian cult. Each edition attracts thousands of people, many of whom come from neighboring towns, filling the streets and squares of the old village. For Giovinazzo, it represents the highlight of the summer, renewing the sense of belonging of an entire community every year.
