World music and folk cultures at the Chiostro delle Clarisse in Terlizzi
Suoni della Murgia is one of the longest-running and most beloved festivals in the Apulian summer. Established in 2001 and now in its twentieth year, it offers an annual festival of world music and folk cultures, spread across the farmhouses, historic estates, ancient churches, cloisters, and natural oases of the Alta Murgia. The artistic direction is led by Luigi Bolognese, who weaves together folk, world music, ethnic sounds, and contemporary influences in a journey designed to appeal to both enthusiasts and younger audiences alike.
The festival has a distinctly itinerant nature: the evenings move from town to town, involving in recent years Altamura, Santeramo in Colle, Minervino Murge, and, of course, the municipality of Terlizzi, in the province of Bari. Each stop highlights a symbolic location of the territory, transforming it into a stage. In Terlizzi, the festival has chosen highly atmospheric spaces such as the historic churches of the town center and the intimate Chiostro delle Clarisse, an ideal setting for listening to music under the stars.
For the summer of 2026, Terlizzi will host two festival evenings on August 18th and 20th, included in the Estate a Terlizzi 2026 calendar, the extensive program promoted by the Municipality featuring over forty events ranging from culture and music to tradition and entertainment, running from June to September. The Chiostro delle Clarisse, in the heart of the historic center, will host concerts dedicated to folk music and the fusion of tradition and sound research. The full artist lineup will be announced by the organizers closer to the dates.
What sets Suoni della Murgia apart is the encounter between music and landscape: intimate concerts, far from large crowds, designed to rediscover the cultural identity of the Murgia and its hinterland. In Terlizzi, a city known for its flower cultivation and historic heritage, the festival evenings become an opportunity to experience the old town in a new light, amidst world melodies and the memory of the folk roots of Puglia.
The Terlizzi dates for the 2026 edition of Suoni della Murgia are set for August 18 and 20, 2026 at the Chiostro delle Clarisse, in the town's historic center. The evenings are part of Estate a Terlizzi 2026, the municipal program that brings together over forty events including music, culture, tradition, and entertainment. The festival confirms its dedication to folk and world music in an intimate and evocative setting. The artistic lineup for the two evenings will be announced by the organizers closer to the dates.
Terlizzi is located in the Metropolitan City of Bari, along the route between Bari and Andria. By car, it can be reached via the SS16 bis and the SP231. By train, it is served by the Terlizzi station on the Bari-Barletta Ferrotramviaria line. The Chiostro delle Clarisse is located in the historic center, within walking distance of the main town squares.
Suoni della Murgia evenings are traditionally free or have a modest entry fee. For the 2026 Terlizzi dates, it is recommended to check the procedures and times on the official channels of the festival and the Municipality of Terlizzi.
