The patronal feast and historic autumn fair of Alezio

In Alezio, a small town in the province of Lecce overlooking the Salento hills just a stone's throw from Gallipoli, devotion to San Rocco is a centuries-old tradition. Unlike most towns that celebrate the pilgrim saint on August 16th, Alezio honors its co-patron in autumn, traditionally on the third Sunday of October: an "off-season" festival rooted in the community's agricultural and religious history.
The autumn timing stems from practical and historical reasons. Since the 18th century, Alezio hosted two autumn fairs linked to field work, where farmers would purchase agricultural tools and seasonal produce, such as chestnuts and walnuts. Over time, while the ancient summer fair "la Lizza" continued to occupy the month of August, the devotion to San Rocco merged with this autumn mercantile tradition, creating a single major town festival.
Devotion was further strengthened in 1918, when the people of Alezio attributed the end of the Spanish flu epidemic to the saint's protection. In the parish church, an ancient 1896 Lecce stone altar still bears the inscription "Eris in peste Patronus" (You shall be a protector in the plague), summarizing the protective role entrusted to San Rocco in the community's collective memory.
The spiritual heart of the festival is marked by rites at the Maria Santissima Addolorata parish: the solemn preparatory triduum, Eucharistic celebrations, and the procession that carries the statue of San Rocco through the streets of the historic center, borne on shoulders amidst the participation of the faithful and the accompaniment of brass bands. The return to the church is traditionally greeted by fireworks.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers two days of beloved secular celebrations. Brass band concerts, the heart of Salento's musical tradition, enliven the squares with prestigious ensembles from across Puglia. Evenings light up with concerts in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, illuminations, and fireworks, while Sunday afternoons are dedicated to children with juggling, magic, and fire shows.
The San Rocco Fair, which takes over the town center streets from the early morning hours, remains the popular soul of the event: stalls selling local products and handicrafts, tastings of chestnuts and new wineโan appointment that combines the spirit of a traditional festival with that of a market. The event thus represents a moment of identity for the entire community of Alezio and the Salento territory in the province of Lecce, Puglia.
