The handmade pasta festival in the heart of the Festa della Lizza
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Pasta Maritata Festival is the culinary event that enriches the celebrations of the Festa della Madonna della Lizza, the patronal feast of the town of Alezio, a small village in Salento in the province of Lecce, Puglia. Organized by the Comitato Feste Alezio, the festival began in 2023 and has quickly become one of the most anticipated events of the Alezio summer, drawing residents and visitors alike to tables set up between Largo Fiera and Via del Santuario.
The absolute star of the evening is handmade pasta prepared according to traditional Salento peasant recipes. Alongside lasagne, cavatelli, and orecchiette, the festival features the famous minchiareddi (also known as maccaruni), a durum wheat pasta hand-rolled with the typical square iron rod, lu fierru te la pasta. The pasta is tossed with a simple, fragrant fresh tomato sauce and topped with plenty of grated ricotta, a dish that tells the story of the region's humble and genuine cuisine.
The festival is more than just food: the evening is brought to life by live performances and music. Local dance schools often open the festivities, while later in the evening, the spotlight turns to pizzica, with traditional Salento bands like I Calanti sweeping the crowd up in the rhythms of the taranta. Amidst the aromas of the kitchen, lights, and folk music, Largo Fiera transforms into a grand open-air village party.
The Pasta Maritata Festival is part of the Festa Patronale di Santa Maria della Lizza calendar, which every year in mid-August brings together religious devotion and popular folklore in Alezio. The festival coincides with the Lizza dei bambini, dedicated to younger guests with games and entertainment, and completes a long weekend of celebrations featuring processions, illuminations, brass bands, bandstands, and musical shows.
Located just a few kilometers from Gallipoli and the Ionian beaches, Alezio is a town with ancient Messapian and Roman origins. Devotion to the Madonna della Lizza, housed in the sanctuary of the same name, is deeply rooted in the community: the festival is thus also an opportunity to discover the identity and hospitality of this authentic corner of Salento, Puglia.
The 2026 edition of the Pasta Maritata Festival in Alezio does not yet have an official date. The event is linked to the Festa della Madonna della Lizza, scheduled from August 14 to 16, 2026, but the day dedicated to the gastronomic festival has not currently been confirmed by the Comitato Feste Alezio. Information will be updated as soon as the program is published.
Alezio can be reached by car via the SS101 Lecce-Gallipoli road, taking the Alezio exit. The nearest train station is in Gallipoli (Ferrovie del Sud Est), a few kilometers away; the reference airport is Brindisi-Salento.
The festival is held outdoors between Largo Fiera and Via del Santuario, in the center of Alezio. Dishes can be purchased directly at the food stands.
