The patronal feast of Alezio featuring Marian devotion, artistic illuminations, and major Ferragosto concerts
The Madonna della Lizza Festival is the most important celebration in Alezio, a town of about six thousand inhabitants in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento, just a few kilometers from Gallipoli. Every year, around Ferragosto, the entire community gathers around its patron saint for a festival that blends popular faith, tradition, and entertainment, drawing devotees and visitors from across the Salento region.
Devotion to the Madonna della Lizza dates back to the Middle Ages. The Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Lizza stands on a hill overlooking the surrounding area, built between the 12th and 13th centuries on an ancient Messapian acropolis during the Norman-Swabian era. Inside, it houses a venerated Basilian-style fresco depicting the Virgin. Tradition also links the festival to the wooden statue of the Madonna, which arrived in the 18th century through the port of Gallipoli, and to the devotional path still known today as A Croce ta Lizza.
Complementing the religious festivities is the Lizza Fair, one of the oldest commercial events in Puglia: its charter dates back to 1484, by the will of Ferdinand of Aragon. Even today, Largo Fiera fills with stalls selling local products, sweets, toys, and handicrafts, keeping alive a ritual of meeting and exchange that has accompanied the festival for centuries.
The program alternates between religious and secular moments. The days are marked by processions featuring the statue of the Madonna, solemn masses in the sanctuary, musical accompaniment by brass bands, and traditional band concerts under the bandstand. As night falls, the town lights up with artistic illuminations, while the festival nights culminate in spectacular firework displays. In Largo Fiera, major free concerts are held, which in recent years have brought well-known names of the Italian music scene to Alezio.
The Lizza Festival is not just about devotion: it is the occasion when Alezio and the entire Salento district come together. With gastronomic festivals, events dedicated to children such as La Lizza dei Bambini, and live music evenings, the festival represents one of the town's strongest identity markers and an authentic experience of Salento celebrating during Ferragosto.
In 2026, the Madonna della Lizza Festival returns to Alezio from August 14 to 16, confirming the three days of patronal festivities that combine devotion and folklore. As per tradition, the program includes processions with the statue of the Madonna, solemn masses in the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Lizza, the opening of the historic Lizza Fair, artistic illuminations, brass bands, and firework displays, in addition to free concerts in Largo Fiera.
The big news for the 2026 edition is the presence of Orietta Berti, an icon of Italian music with over sixty years of career, announced as the super guest for the closing evening on August 16. The Comitato Feste Alezio, chaired by Davide Restino, is currently finalizing the rest of the schedule.
The Comitato Feste Alezio has announced Orietta Berti as the super guest for August 16, 2026. The complete program for the three days (August 14-15-16), including other musical events, processions, masses, illuminations, and fireworks, will be published by the Organizing Committee on official social media channels in the weeks leading up to the festival.
The festivities take place in Alezio (LE), in Puglia. The religious heart is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Lizza, while concerts, the fair, and illuminations animate Largo Fiera and the town center streets.
By car: Alezio is a few kilometers from Gallipoli, reachable via the SS101 Lecce-Gallipoli road. By train: the reference station is Gallipoli on the Ferrovie del Sud Est line, with connections from Lecce. Nearest airport: Brindisi.
