The patronal feast of Tuglie and the Procession of the Angels in Salento
Every year, on July 16th and 17th, the small town of Tuglie, in the province of Lecce, gathers around its patron saint, the Madonna del Carmine. Within the rich calendar of Salento's patronal feasts, the one in Tuglie holds a special place for its intimate atmosphere and a unique tradition that sets it apart: the famous Procession of the Angels. The recurrence, set to the liturgical date of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel, is deeply felt by the entire community and draws back many Tuglie natives who have emigrated elsewhere.
The heart of the festival is the solemn evening procession on July 16th. The papier-mâché statue of the Madonna, kept in the parish church, is carried through the decorated streets, escorted by dozens of children dressed as little angels. This scene recalls the grand fresco that decorates the high altar, where the Virgin is depicted against a backdrop of a myriad of angels singing in a choir. It is from this evocative custom that the procession takes the name "Procession of the Angels," one of the most moving and photographed moments of the Salento summer.
The day of July 16th opens at dawn with traditional pyrotechnic salutes and cannon blasts, while the band marches through the town center, providing a musical backdrop to the celebrations. In the late afternoon, a solemn mass is held, followed by the procession amidst flares, falling petals, and acclamations to the Madonna. The evening continues with a brass band concert under the bandstand, performances, and the release of traditional hot air balloons, culminating in a grand fireworks display.
The second day, July 17th, is dedicated primarily to the secular and social aspects: evening concerts in the square, musical performances, craft markets, and food stalls featuring typical Salento cuisine. The town streets are lit up with spectacular illuminations by renowned Apulian firms, transforming Tuglie into a blaze of light.
The Madonna del Carmine Festival is one of the key events of "Sotto il Cielo di Tuglie" (Under the Sky of Tuglie), the rich summer program promoted by the Municipality of Tuglie together with local associations, which offers dozens of events spanning culture, music, sports, traditions, and gastronomy between July and October. For visitors, it is the ideal opportunity to discover an authentic village in the Salento hinterland, just a few kilometers from the Ionian beaches, and to experience the genuine popular devotion of Puglia.
