The Saints Cosmas and Damian Festival in Galatone

At the end of September, Villaggio Santa Rita, a coastal hamlet in the municipality of Galatone in the province of Lecce, gathers around its patron saints for the Saints Cosmas and Damian Festival, dedicated to the martyrs Cosmas and Damian. The feast falls on September 26th, the day the Church commemorates the two physician brothers who, according to tradition, treated the sick without asking for payment. For this reason, they are venerated as the patron saints of doctors and protectors of the suffering, with a devotion deeply felt throughout Salento and Puglia.

Villaggio Santa Rita, a community in celebration

The festival is promoted by the Santi Cosma e Damiano Martiri Parish, which enlivens the so-called "spiritual summer" of Villaggio Santa Rita, along the road connecting Galatone to Santa Maria al Bagno. In this hamlet, which has grown among the coastal holiday homes, the parish community has set up a large tent-church to welcome the many faithful, residents, and tourists who participate in the celebrations. The Saints Cosmas and Damian festivities represent the highlight of this season of events.

Between faith and folk tradition

As in the most authentic Salento patronal feasts, the heart of the celebration is religious: holy masses, the preparatory triduum, and above all the procession with the statues of the Saints, which winds through the village streets accompanied by the faithful.
