The patronal feast of Collepasso: a blend of faith, tradition, and Salento culture
The Patronal Feast of the Madonna delle Grazie is the most significant event in the calendar of Collepasso, a town in the lower Salento area of the Lecce province, in Puglia. Devotion to the Virgin of Grace, the town's patron saint, is rooted in 1851 and remains the heart of the local identity. Celebrations take place in early September, culminating in the liturgical feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on September 8th, to whom the majestic Mother Church—built between 1865 and 1871 in local Lecce stone—is dedicated.
The sacred program begins with the preparatory novena, following the tradition of lighting lamps on house facades to mark the approach of the feast. The most solemn moment is the procession with the statue of the Madonna, which travels through the town streets from the Mother Church square to Piazza Dante, the civic heart of Collepasso dominated by the 1914 Clock Tower. Following an ancient rite, the statue bearers wear dark suits with white shirts and gloves; during the preacher's address, the keys to the city are symbolically presented to the Virgin.
Alongside the religious dimension, the feast thrives on its major civil and commercial highlight: the Madonna delle Grazie market fair, first held in 1981. Taking place on Sunday morning from the crack of dawn, it draws exhibitors, vendors, and visitors from across the Salento region, with stalls offering local products, handicrafts, and goods of all kinds animating the town center.
The festive evenings are marked by daytime and evening brass band concerts—a staple of Puglian patronal feasts—spectacular illuminations decorating Piazza Dante and the main streets, and firework displays that close each day. Among the most characteristic traditions is the launching of hot air balloons, a spectacle shared with only a few other locations in Salento.
Rooted in popular faith yet capable of engaging the entire community, the Patronal Feast of the Madonna delle Grazie in Collepasso serves as a reunion for residents, returning emigrants, and visitors from neighboring towns. It is an authentic portrait of Salento devotion and conviviality, where the sacred and the profane intertwine over three days of celebration.
The Madonna delle Grazie Feast Committee has announced the dates for the 2026 edition, scheduled from September 6th to 8th in Collepasso, with the central moment being the liturgical feast of the September 8th, the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
As per tradition, the religious program will include the preparatory novena, solemn masses, and the procession with the patron saint's statue from the Mother Church square to Piazza Dante. The civil side will enliven the town center with the historic market fair, brass band concerts, illuminations, and firework displays.
The detailed program, including guest artists and daily schedules, will be published by the Committee in the weeks leading up to the feast.
