The religious festival in Galatone featuring the Bread and Wine Festival
Every year, at the beginning of September, Galatone (Province of Lecce, Puglia) gathers around its Convent-Sanctuary of the Madonna della Grazia, run by the Franciscan Friars Minor. The festival is one of the most heartfelt religious and popular events in Salento, attracting faithful and visitors from neighboring towns who climb to the sanctuary nestled among olive trees on the outskirts of the town.
At the heart of the devotion is a venerated effigy of the Virgin, kept in the convent since 1595, when the image was entrusted to the friars. The convent complex was later built in 1674 by the Alcantarine friars, and on September 8, 1956, the church was elevated to a Diocesan Marian Sanctuary by Bishop Corrado Ursi. Since 1956, the care of the sanctuary has been entrusted to the Friars Minor.
The most famous feature of the icon is a dark mark covering the Madonna's right eye, resembling a bruise. Popular tradition links it to the story of Antonio Ciuccoli, a gambler who, after losing everything, threw an oil lamp at the image in a fit of rage, leaving that mark forever. The story, passed down from generation to generation, contributes to the aura of mystery and charm surrounding the sanctuary in Galatone.
Alongside the religious rites lives the most iconic gastronomic tradition of the festival: the Bread and Wine Festival. It was the humble meal that pilgrims consumed while sitting under the lush olive trees near the convent, at the end of the evening novena, to satisfy their hunger and thirst. Even today, the typical pagnotta (loaf) is distributed, accompanied by ricotta and salted sardines, all washed down with mieru, the rustic wine of Salento.
The festival combines the sacred and the secular according to the model of the great Puglian patronal feasts: the streets of the center light up with luminarie (artistic light displays), brass band concerts animate the evenings, market stalls fill the streets, and the sky is lit up by firework displays. On the eve of the festival, a solemn procession carries the statue of the Virgin through the streets of the town, accompanied by the band, while on September 8th, the feast of the Nativity of Mary, numerous masses are celebrated in the sanctuary, with the main service presided over by the Bishop of Nardò-Gallipoli.
For those visiting Salento in early September, the Madonna della Grazia Festival in Galatone is the ideal opportunity to experience authentic Puglian popular religiosity, amidst devotion, brass band music, traditional street food, and the unique atmosphere of a Franciscan sanctuary surrounded by ancient olive trees.
The Our Lady of Grace Festival 2026 in Galatone (LE) will be held from September 6 to 8, 2026, with September 8th crowning the festivities on the day of the Nativity of Mary.
The structure of the festival follows the same pattern every year, rooted in Salento devotion: evening novena in the preceding days, solemn procession with the statue of the Virgin accompanied by the band, illuminations and brass band concerts along the streets of the center, the fair with its stalls, firework displays, and numerous masses in the sanctuary on September 8th. There will also be the traditional Bread and Wine Festival, with the distribution of bread, ricotta, salted sardines, and mieru.
The official 2026 program, with the times of the processions, the names of the bands and musical groups, and the calendar of celebrations, will be published by the Convent-Sanctuary of the Friars Minor closer to the festival.
