The magic of Salento nights on the Serra di Giuggianello, featuring a Byzantine crypt, folk music, and oven-baked lamb
In the small village of Giuggianello, nestled in the province of Lecce, the San Giovanni Festival stands as one of the most historic popular celebrations in the region. Rather than in the town center, the event unfolds in the open countryside on the evocative Serra di Giuggianello. At 120 meters above sea level, it offers panoramic views across central Salento, surrounded by ancient olive trees and Mediterranean flora.
The heart of the festival is the Byzantine crypt of San Giovanni Battista, a cave-chapel dating back to the 10th-11th century that still preserves ancient frescoes. Historically, on June 24th, the local population would process up to "Monte San Giovanni" to celebrate Mass according to the Greek-Byzantine rite. Meanwhile, under the cover of night, many would wander the fields to gather dew-kissed herbs, believed to hold purifying and healing powers according to the ancient traditions of St. John's Eve.
This unique tradition, along with the preservation of the grotto, was revived by the Centro di Cultura Sociale e di Ricerche (CCSR) of Giuggianello, which has managed the event since 1990. Every year, Mass is celebrated on the square in front of the cave. Following the religious rite, the traditional distribution of cheese and wine takes place, a gesture of communal sharing that has been passed down for centuries. In recent years, the association, led by president Vincenzo Ruggeri, has also sought to reconnect with the site's Byzantine roots, including celebrations dedicated to Saint John Chrysostom, to whom the grotto was originally dedicated before the shift to the Latin cult of the Baptist.
After the religious observances, the Serra comes alive with festivities. The festival features three nights of live music and traditional dancing on the threshing floor, performed by renowned Salento folk bands. Visitors can enjoy gastronomic stalls serving typical Salento dishes, with the star of the menu being oven-baked lamb with potatoes, paired with local wines and regional products. Proceeds from the event support local cultural initiatives, such as the renovation of community service spaces.
The San Giovanni Festival is much more than a local fair; it is an ancient rite that weaves together faith, archaeology, nature, and folk culture in one of the most enchanting corners of Puglia, where megaliths, legends, and rural landscapes tell a thousand-year-old story.
The 2026 edition of the San Giovanni Festival, the twenty-first organized by the Centro di Cultura Sociale e di Ricerche, was held from June 24 to 26, 2026, on the Serra di Giuggianello, around the Byzantine crypt of San Giovanni Battista. The formula combining religious, popular, and gastronomic elements was confirmed, with proceeds dedicated to renovating a space for local cultural services.
