The patronal feast of Muro Leccese, blending Byzantine faith and Salento tradition
In the heart of Salento, in the province of Lecce, the town of Muro Leccese dedicates one of its most cherished events every summer to Santa Marina, the patron saint and a symbolic figure for the entire community. The Santa Marina Festival is traditionally celebrated around the second Sunday of July and combines, as per the best Apulian tradition, the religious and civil dimensions: from church rites to the procession of the statue through the town streets, to evening concerts, illuminations, and the fireworks that conclude the festivities.
The festival has its roots in the ancient history of the village. Muro Leccese is home to the church of Santa Marina of Antioch, one of the oldest Christian churches in the Terra d'Otranto, built between the 9th and 11th centuries in the Byzantine style, with a single nave and semicircular apse. Inside, it preserves one of the oldest cycles of frescoes in the Mediterranean dedicated to the life and works of Saint Nicholas, created before 1087. Santa Marina, venerated as the protector of pregnant women, also gives her name to the restored square that houses, next to an ancient menhir, the town's Byzantine jewel.
The spiritual heart of the festival is marked by the Solemn Holy Mass and the procession of the Saint's statue, accompanied by musical bands and the participation of the faithful. Moments of prayer, blessings, and liturgical celebrations enliven the days, in an intertwining of devotion and community identity that makes the occasion one of the most anticipated events in the Muro Leccese calendar.
Participating in the Santa Marina Festival means experiencing the most authentic Salento, far from the most crowded tourist routes. Muro Leccese, with its Messapian walls, historic palaces, and small Byzantine chapel, offers visitors a setting of great charm, where popular faith, music, and Apulian gastronomy merge into a unique community experience. The event has free admission and represents an excellent opportunity to discover a precious corner of the Province of Lecce and Puglia.
The 2026 Santa Marina Festival in Muro Leccese will take place on July 12 and 13, 2026, following the tradition of the second Sunday of July. The dates are confirmed by the organizing committee through the official social media channels of the event.
As in previous editions, the Solemn Holy Mass and the procession of the Saint's statue are expected, along with artistic illuminations in the historic center, brass band concerts and evening shows in the square, the exhibition and market of ornamental poultry and local products with Coldiretti-Campagna Amica, and the traditional fireworks to close the festivities. The complete lineup of artists and schedules will be published by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event.
Muro Leccese is located in southern Salento, in the province of Lecce. By car, it can be reached via the state road connecting Maglie to Otranto; the nearest train station is Maglie, on the Ferrovie del Sud Est line, a few kilometers from the town. The reference airports are Brindisi-Casale and Bari-Palese.
The festivities enliven the historic center of Muro Leccese, with the square and the church of Santa Marina as iconic landmarks. Free admission to all events.
During the festival days, the center can be crowded: it is advisable to park in the areas outside the village. For updated times and a detailed program, it is best to consult the official social media channels of the festival.
