About Santu Donnu

In Nociglia, a small village in the Lower Salento region of Lecce, the Santu Donnu Country Festival is one of the most unique folk traditions in the Salento peninsula. Every summer, a bicycle parade accompanies the statue of Santu Donnu from the town center to the Fontana district, nestled in the Parco dei Paduli, for the blessing of the fields. The evening continues with food stalls, traveling musicians, and pizzica dancing in an atmosphere of authentic rural conviviality.

A rural festival with deep roots

The Santu Donnu Country Festival is one of the most curious and beloved folk rituals in Salento. It takes place in Nociglia, a tiny village in the Lower Salento area of the province of Lecce (Municipality of Nociglia, Province of Lecce, Puglia), and traces its origins back to 1949, the year when—according to local memory—the statue of Santu Donnu first arrived in Nociglia. Since then, the tradition has been repeated almost without interruption, passed down from generation to generation.

Santu Donnu is not a saint from the Catholic calendar; he is a figure tied to rural culture, whose true meaning has been lost in the folds of popular memory. Some interpret the figure as a good-natured mockery of the landowners and lords of the past, while others see it simply as a pretext to gather outdoors on August evenings. It is precisely this ambiguity that makes the festival so special: a secular, communal celebration that speaks of the land, farm work, and a sense of belonging.

The parade and the blessing of the fields

The ritual heart of the day is the parade. The gathering takes place in Piazza Ruggieri, in the center of Nociglia: from here, the statue of Santu Donnu sets off, transported on an Ape (three-wheeled vehicle), at the head of a cheerful caravan of bicycles. The parade crosses the countryside toward the Fontana district, along the provincial road connecting Nociglia to Supersano. Upon arrival, the blessing of the fields is celebrated, a moment of reflection and community spirit that gives meaning to the entire festival.

The Fontana district and the Parco dei Paduli

The festival takes place in the enchanting setting of Nociglia Fontana, a small rural enclave framed by imposing oak trees, canals, reed beds, and stretches of ancient olive groves in the heart of the Parco dei Paduli. This landscape, typical of the Salento hinterland, is an integral part of the event's identity: recent editions have also made room for environmental stewardship practices, including reforestation and land regeneration projects in the Fontana area.

Music, pizzica, and conviviality

At nightfall, the festival changes its face: food stalls open, offering traditional Salento flavors, while traveling music and pizzica dancing enliven the district until late at night. This is the most popular part of the event, where the Nociglia community and visitors come together through dance, food, and folk songs in an atmosphere of genuine conviviality.

Organizers

The event has been organized for several years by the Terrikate cultural association, with the support of the Municipality of Nociglia. Thanks to their work, this ancient country festival continues to live and renew itself, keeping the bond between the Salento village and its rural history intact.
