The world capital of illuminations lights up the Salento
In the heart of the Salento, just a few kilometers from Lecce, the town of Scorrano preserves one of the most fascinating traditions in Puglia. Every year, at the beginning of July, this small village in the province of Lecce becomes the world capital of illuminations in honor of its patron saint, Santa Domenica. The famous local firms, which create installations for festivals throughout Italy and Europe, reserve the best of their artistry for this very occasion, lighting up the streets of the town with unparalleled light architectures.
The true spectacle of the festival lies in the monumental illuminations: wooden and steel structures reaching up to forty meters in height, covered with millions of bulbs, LEDs, and microlights arranged in intricate geometric patterns. Triumphal arches, Baroque domes, and Gothic towers change every year, the result of months of work by local master artisans, known as paratori. The grand musical light shows, synchronized to music, transform squares and streets into true cathedrals of light that leave both residents and tourists breathless.
The festival is rooted in popular devotion to Santa Domenica, the protector of Scorrano. The religious program, led by the local parish, begins with a novena and culminates on July 6th, the main day, with the solemn procession of the Saint's statue through the streets of the town, accompanied by brass bands and the traditional ceremony of the symbolic handing over of the city keys.
Alongside the lights, the festival offers a rich secular program: brass band concerts in the bandstand, evening musical performances, and the celebrated firework competitions, featuring daytime displays in the afternoon and spectacular night-time pyrotechnics that ignite the sky over Scorrano. The evenings continue late into the night, amidst folklore, traditional Salento music, and widespread joy.
Throughout the festival days, the town center comes alive with food stalls offering local specialties: pittule, frise, puccia, panzerotti, and typical Salento liqueurs. It is the perfect opportunity to combine the wonder of the lights with the authentic taste of Puglian cuisine.
With approximately 600,000 visitors each year, the Santa Domenica Festival has become an internationally recognized event, a symbol of the identity and artisanal creativity of Scorrano and the entire Salento region. A festival where tradition, faith, and art intertwine in an unforgettable experience.
The 2026 edition of the Santa Domenica Festival will be held in Scorrano (Lecce) from July 5th to 8th, 2026. The festival opens on the evening of July 5th with the solemn lighting of the illuminations, a choreography of lights synchronized to music. July 6th, the main day, is dedicated to the procession of the Saint's statue and the ceremony of the symbolic handing over of the city keys, featuring a double firework competition (daytime displays in the afternoon and night-time fireworks). The evenings of July 7th and 8th continue with concerts, folk music, and the impressive light architectures of the local paratori.
The detailed program with times and artists will be published by the Patronal Festival Committee in the weeks preceding the event.
Scorrano is located in the Salento hinterland, about 30 km south of Lecce. By car, it can be reached via the SS 275 (Scorrano exit); the nearest train station is served by the Ferrovie del Sud Est. The reference airport is Brindisi-Salento (about 70 km away).
During the festival days, the town center is closed to traffic: it is advisable to park on the outskirts and reach the town on foot. We recommend arriving in the afternoon and finding a spot at least an hour before sunset to witness the lighting of the illuminations. Food stalls remain open every evening until midnight.
Access to the festival and the illuminations is free.
