The 'festa te li miluni' in Giuggianello, in the heart of Salento
In Giuggianello, a tiny village in the Salento hinterland in the Province of Lecce, the end of July has always had a sweet, red flavor: that of watermelon. The Watermelon Festival, which the local dialect affectionately calls "la festa te li miluni" (the melon festival), marks the conclusion of the celebrations in honor of Saint Christopher each year and represents the secular and popular side of the patronal feast. It is one of those genuine, no-frills village festivals where the square fills with people and the fruit that best defines summer becomes the absolute star.
The heart of the event is the free distribution of watermelon slices along the streets and in the main square of the historic center. Fresh, sweet, and juicy watermelons are offered to residents and tourists alike in an atmosphere of shared joy: it is the convivial gesture that gives meaning to the entire festival, an invitation to pause, taste, and chat under the festive lights. Surrounding the distribution are food stalls featuring typical Salento flavors and local products.
Giuggianello is the only town in Salento under the protection of Saint Christopher, the "Christ-bearer". Tradition holds that the village gained the saint's protection after being delivered, through his intercession, from a severe famine caused by a long drought. This is the origin of the deep bond between the community, the patron saint, and the fruits of the land: the watermelon festival is, at its core, a popular thanksgiving for water and the abundance regained. Religious celebrations are concentrated on July 24th and 25th, with the procession of the saint's statue, illuminations, brass band concerts, and fireworks; on July 26th, the festivities "descend" into the square with the festival.
No Salento festival is truly complete without its music. The Watermelon Festival is accompanied by the songs and traditional dances of Salento, with the pizzica setting the rhythm for the evening. Folk groups and musicians enliven the square, turning the tasting into a collective party that brings different generations together around the tambourine.
With just over a thousand inhabitants, Giuggianello is a small agricultural village nestled in the landscape of the Salento Serre, rich in dolmens, menhirs, and rock-hewn sites such as the evocative Byzantine Crypt of Saint John the Baptist. Visiting the village during the festival means discovering an authentic Salento far from the major tourist flows, where farming traditions are still alive and the patronal feast remains a deeply felt event for the entire community of the Province of Lecce, in Puglia.
The Watermelon Festival is traditionally held on July 26th, the day after the patronal feast of Saint Christopher, marking the end of the celebrations. Admission is free and the watermelon distribution is complimentary.
The 2026 Watermelon Festival in Giuggianello will take place on July 26, 2026, the day after the patronal feast of Saint Christopher (July 24-25). As per tradition, the village square will host the free distribution of fresh watermelon slices, accompanied by food stalls featuring typical Salento flavors and folk music, with dancing and pizzica to close the evening.
The official schedule with times and the names of the musical groups performing will be published by the organizers closer to the event. Admission is free and the watermelon tasting in the square is complimentary.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including times and names of artists and musical groups, has not yet been published and will be announced in the weeks leading up to the event.
The traditional structure of the evening includes:
Giuggianello is located in the Salento hinterland, in the Province of Lecce. By car, it can be reached from the SS275 road towards Maglie-Santa Cesarea Terme, exiting towards Muro Leccese and Giuggianello. The nearest train station is Maglie, on the Ferrovie del Sud Est line, just a few kilometers from the village.
Admission to the festival is free. The distribution of watermelon slices in the square is free; food stalls offer typical dishes and products for purchase.
The festival takes place outdoors in the historic center during summer evenings: light clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended for walking through the village streets. We suggest pairing your visit with a trip to the Mother Church of Saint Anthony Abbot and the Byzantine Crypt of Saint John the Baptist.
