About Bruschetta Festival

Set in the evocative surroundings of the Sanctuary of Montevergine in Palmariggi, near Lecce, the Bruschetta Festival celebrates the authentic taste of toasted breadโ€”the so-called "poor man's steak"โ€”every summer. Enjoy three evenings of local Salento gastronomy, featuring bruschetta topped with regional extra virgin olive oil, local cheeses, cured meats, and farm-fresh vegetables, all accompanied by traditional Salento folk music. This free-entry Ferragosto tradition is organized by the Mons Jovis association.

The Bruschetta Festival in Palmariggi

Every summer, the small village of Palmariggi, in the heart of the Salento region near Lecce, hosts the Bruschetta Festival, one of the most anticipated gastronomic events of the Ferragosto season. The festival takes place in the evocative setting of the Sanctuary of Montevergine, which overlooks the Salento countryside and offers a unique panoramic view of the olive groves stretching down to the sea.

Toasted bread, the "poor man's steak"

The star of the show is the bruschetta, or rather the traditional Salento pane bruscatu: slices of wood-fired bread, toasted, rubbed with garlic, and generously drizzled with extra virgin olive oil produced in the hills of Palmariggi, a land historically dedicated to olive cultivation. It is the ultimate peasant dish, the "poor man's steak" that tells the story of simple farm life and has now become a symbol of genuine, identity-driven cuisine.

Zero-kilometer flavors

The Bruschetta Festival focuses entirely on zero-kilometer products: bruschetta, cheeses, cured meats, oil, vegetables, and fruit come exclusively from farmers and artisans in Palmariggi and the surrounding area. Alongside classic and gourmet bruschetta, the stalls offer sandwiches with roasted meat and horse meat stew, pittule, fries, and traditional desserts, all washed down with local beer and wine. A dedicated gluten-free station, managed in collaboration with AIC Puglia, ensures the festival is accessible to those with celiac disease.

Folk music and atmosphere

The evenings are soundtracked by the notes of Salento folk music: pizzica, taranta, and traditional songs bring the sanctuary courtyard to life, featuring some of the most prominent artists in the Puglian folk scene. The atmosphere is that of a genuine village feast, where families, visitors, and tourists gather at Montevergine to savor the flavors of Salento under the August stars.

A signature event of Salento

Organized by the Mons Jovis association with the patronage of the Municipality of Palmariggi and the Puglia Region, the Bruschetta Festival is much more than just a food fair: it is a way to rediscover and celebrate the region's rural roots, promote local culinary excellence, and offer visitors the true, authentic taste of a tradition deeply embedded in the history of Salento.

Bruschetta Festival โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Palmariggi Bruschetta Festival has not yet been officially announced. The festival traditionally takes place at the Sanctuary of Montevergine during the Ferragosto period, featuring bruschetta, local Salento products, and evenings of folk music. Detailed dates and the program will be announced by the organizers on the Mons Jovis association's social media channels.

The Bruschetta Festival of Palmariggi returns in 2026 to the Sanctuary of Montevergine, continuing the summer tradition of toasted bread and zero-kilometer flavors from Salento. At the moment, the dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: the event is traditionally held during the Ferragosto period, with free entry and Salento folk music providing the backdrop for the evenings.
