The patronal feast of Sanarica, blending devotion, illuminations, and the Sagra te lu Lacciu
The Madonna delle Grazie Festival is the most important event of the year for Sanarica, a small town in the lower Salento area of the province of Lecce, in the heart of the most authentic Puglia. Every September, the entire village gathers around its patron saint, the Madonna delle Grazie, venerated in the Sanctuary of the same name: two days where religious devotion and civic celebration intertwine, featuring solemn ceremonies, processions, light displays, concerts, and fireworks.
The cult revolves around the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, which houses the ancient statue of the Virgin. Popular tradition links this devotion to a legend of sailors from Taranto who were saved from a storm thanks to the Madonna's intercession: a story that still fuels the faith of the local people and pilgrims today. During the festival, it is not uncommon to see the faithful reaching the Sanctuary on foot from towns across the Salento hinterland, fulfilling a vow or simply renewing an ancient promise.
The religious heart of the festival consists of Holy Masses held from dawn until evening, the Solemn Mass on the main day, and the processions that accompany the statue of the Madonna through the streets of the village, amidst crowds and deep devotion. The liturgical moments are accompanied by the music of brass bands, while the evenings come alive with musical performances in the square, concluding with traditional fireworks that light up the Salento sky.
A defining element of the festival is the Sagra te lu Lacciu, the celery festival: during the celebrations, fresh celery is distributed, a typical local product closely tied to the occasion. Along with food stalls and markets, it is one of the most anticipated moments for both adults and children, transforming religious devotion into a true community celebration.
Experiencing the Madonna delle Grazie Festival means immersing yourself in the atmosphere of the small Salento villages in the province of Lecce, where illuminations adorn the squares and traditions are passed down from generation to generation. It is the perfect opportunity to discover Sanarica and its hinterland, far from the most beaten tourist paths of the coast.
