The Salento summer carnival: a blend of irony, pizzica music, and rustic cuisine
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of Salento, in San Cassiano—a small town in the province of Lecce, Puglia—one of the most original and entertaining folk festivals in the region takes place every summer: the Festa de U Cannuzzutu. It has become a staple of the Salento summer, drawing both locals and visitors with its authenticity and distinctive, lighthearted spirit.
The festival is dedicated to the cannuzzuti, or true food lovers. At the heart of the event is the figure of U Cannuzzutu, a character from traditional peasant folklore. With his comical attire and caricatured movements, he serves as an ironic symbol of rural wisdom and the art of facing life with wit and joy. The entire day revolves around this mask, creating a kind of summer carnival where irony and peasant culture blend with the ancient customs of the village.
The highlight is the theatrical parade through the village streets: costumed performers, sketches, dances, and folk music turn the historic center of San Cassiano into an open-air stage. The event features traditional Salento music, with the rhythmic beat of the pizzica, alongside comedy shows and entertainment for all ages. It is a true community festival, built on the participation of the residents, making it a deeply felt event rooted in the town's identity.
True to its nature as a food-focused festival, the Festa de U Cannuzzutu dedicates plenty of space to food stalls where you can sample the best local cuisine at affordable prices: pittule, grilled meats, rustic sandwiches, and other typical Salento flavors, all paired with local red wine. Alongside the classic menu, a green menu with vegetarian options is also available, reflecting a growing focus on culinary variety.
The festival is organized by the Pro Loco of San Cassiano, which works every year to enrich the event with new offerings while maintaining high gastronomic quality. Experiencing the Festa de U Cannuzzutu is also the perfect opportunity to discover San Cassiano and this authentic corner of the Salento hinterland, far from the crowded coastal tourist routes but rich in traditions, flavors, and hospitality.
The dates for the 2026 edition of the Festa de U Cannuzzutu have not yet been announced. Based on previous editions, the festival usually takes place in August in San Cassiano (LE), featuring the traditional theatrical parade through the village streets, Salento folk music, and food stalls. The detailed program will be communicated by the Pro Loco of San Cassiano in the weeks leading up to the event.
The festival takes place in the historic center of San Cassiano (LE), throughout the streets and squares of the village in the Salento region.
