About Bread Festival

The Bread Festival of Cursi is one of the most authentic folk celebrations in Salento, in the province of Lecce. Organized continuously since 1971 by the Amici del Pane Association, it takes place during the final days of July in the Largo del Santuario Maria SS. dell'Abbondanza. The heart of the event is the blessing of the wheat bread, which commemorates the miracle of 1640 linked to the Madonna dell'Abbondanza. Two evenings of Salento gastronomy, live music, and rural traditions bring the small town in the Capo di Leuca area to life.

A festival dedicated to bread, a symbol of abundance

The Bread Festival of Cursi is an event deeply rooted in the traditions of Salento, particularly in the province of Lecce, in Apulia. Organized continuously since 1971 by the Amici del Pane Association, the festival takes place every year during the final days of July in the Largo del Santuario Maria SS. dell'Abbondanza, the devotional heart of this small town in the Capo di Leuca area. Here, bread is more than just food; it is the symbol of a rural community with deep roots in the land and faith.

The miracle of 1640 and the Madonna dell'Abbondanza

The festival stems from the memory of a deeply felt historical and religious event. According to tradition, in 1640, after a long drought that threatened famine, the Virgin appeared on an April morning to Biagio Orlando Natali, who had invoked her intercession. Abundant rain fell on the fields, ensuring Cursi and the entire Terra d'Otranto an unexpectedly rich harvest. Since then, the Madonna has been venerated under the title of Madonna dell'Abbondanza and proclaimed the town's protector. The most evocative moment of the festival is the blessing and distribution of the wheat bread, which commemorates that very gesture of Providence.

The flavors of Salento tradition

The beating heart of the festival is the popular gastronomy of Salento, served at the stalls set up in the sanctuary square. Among the specialties to taste during the two evenings:

  • Cursi bread baked in wood-fired ovens, the absolute star of the festival;
  • Pittule (leavened dough fritters) and seasoned friselle;
  • 'Mpille, bread seasoned with onion, garlic, tomato, chili pepper, and olives;
  • Roasted sausage, pork with peppers, and other traditional rural dishes;
  • Local Salento wines paired with the meals.

Folk music and village atmosphere

The gastronomic evenings are always accompanied by a rich program of live music, with brass bands, Salento folk groups, and pizzica music that enliven the square until late at night. The Bread Festival thus represents a moment of gathering for the entire Cursi community and for the many visitors who, in the height of the Salento summer, choose to discover the hinterland of Capo di Leuca, far from the crowded beaches.

Cursi, the town of Lecce stone

Located in lower Salento, the Municipality of Cursi is famous for its ancient Lecce stone quarriesโ€”a soft, golden material that shaped the Baroque palaces of Lecce and the entire Salento peninsula. Visiting Cursi during the Bread Festival means combining the pleasure of good food with the discovery of an authentic village, rich in history, devotion, and living traditions.

Bread Festival โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Bread Festival of Cursi is scheduled for July 22 and 23, as usual in the final days of the month at the Largo del Santuario Maria SS. dell'Abbondanza. Two evenings dedicated to wood-fired bread, Salento gastronomy, and folk music, featuring the traditional blessing of the bread to commemorate the miracle of 1640.

The Bread Festival of Cursi 2026 will be held on July 22 and 23 at the Largo del Santuario Maria SS. dell'Abbondanza, confirming the summer event organized by the Amici del Pane Association. As every year, the two evenings will offer tastings of Cursi bread and Salento specialties at the food stalls, accompanied by concerts and folk music. The central moment remains the blessing and distribution of the wheat bread, the devotional heart of the festival.
