Two evenings of bread, tradition, and folk music in the heart of Salento
The Bread Festival of Cursi is an event deeply rooted in the traditions of Salento, particularly in the province of Lecce, in Apulia. Organized continuously since 1971 by the Amici del Pane Association, the festival takes place every year during the final days of July in the Largo del Santuario Maria SS. dell'Abbondanza, the devotional heart of this small town in the Capo di Leuca area. Here, bread is more than just food; it is the symbol of a rural community with deep roots in the land and faith.
The festival stems from the memory of a deeply felt historical and religious event. According to tradition, in 1640, after a long drought that threatened famine, the Virgin appeared on an April morning to Biagio Orlando Natali, who had invoked her intercession. Abundant rain fell on the fields, ensuring Cursi and the entire Terra d'Otranto an unexpectedly rich harvest. Since then, the Madonna has been venerated under the title of Madonna dell'Abbondanza and proclaimed the town's protector. The most evocative moment of the festival is the blessing and distribution of the wheat bread, which commemorates that very gesture of Providence.
The beating heart of the festival is the popular gastronomy of Salento, served at the stalls set up in the sanctuary square. Among the specialties to taste during the two evenings:
The gastronomic evenings are always accompanied by a rich program of live music, with brass bands, Salento folk groups, and pizzica music that enliven the square until late at night. The Bread Festival thus represents a moment of gathering for the entire Cursi community and for the many visitors who, in the height of the Salento summer, choose to discover the hinterland of Capo di Leuca, far from the crowded beaches.
Located in lower Salento, the Municipality of Cursi is famous for its ancient Lecce stone quarriesโa soft, golden material that shaped the Baroque palaces of Lecce and the entire Salento peninsula. Visiting Cursi during the Bread Festival means combining the pleasure of good food with the discovery of an authentic village, rich in history, devotion, and living traditions.
The Bread Festival of Cursi 2026 will be held on July 22 and 23 at the Largo del Santuario Maria SS. dell'Abbondanza, confirming the summer event organized by the Amici del Pane Association. As every year, the two evenings will offer tastings of Cursi bread and Salento specialties at the food stalls, accompanied by concerts and folk music. The central moment remains the blessing and distribution of the wheat bread, the devotional heart of the festival.
Cursi is located in lower Salento, in the province of Lecce. By car, it can be reached via the SS16 and the provincial road connecting Maglie and Otranto; the nearest train stations are those of the Ferrovie del Sud Est in Maglie and Cursi-Bagnolo. The reference airport is Brindisi.
The festival takes place over two summer evenings, generally starting in the evening. Admission is free; tastings at the food stalls are for a fee.
In the summer months, Salento is very busy: it is advisable to book accommodation in nearby towns (Maglie, Otranto, Melpignano) in advance and to check dates and programs with the Municipality of Cursi or the Amici del Pane Association.
