About Sagra du Taraddhru

Every summer, at the end of July, the village of Castiglione d'Otranto—a hamlet of Andrano in the province of Lecce—celebrates the Sagra du Taraddhru. This popular festival is dedicated to the 'tarallo d'orzo', a traditional dark Salento-style frisa made with barley flour and topped with fresh tomatoes, peppers, chili, olive oil, and salt. Established in the late 1980s and linked to the ancient Santa Maria Maddalena Fair, the festival combines free tastings, locally sourced products, and evenings of traditional Salento folk music featuring the infectious rhythms of the pizzica.

The Sagra du Taraddhru in Castiglione d'Otranto

The Sagra du Taraddhru is one of the most cherished gastronomic events of the Salento summer. It takes place every year towards the end of July in the small, charming village of Castiglione d'Otranto, a hamlet of Andrano, in the heart of the Salento region in the province of Lecce. The event, which has been held since the late 1980s, attracts hundreds of visitors to the streets and squares of the historic center each year.

The taraddhru, the star of the festival

The signature dish is the taraddhru, or barley tarallo: a type of traditional Salento frisa, but with a darker color because it is prepared with barley flour rather than wheat flour alone. At the food stalls, these barley taralli are distributed for free and seasoned according to peasant tradition, with everything from fresh tomatoes to fried peppers, chili, oil, and salt. The festival places great emphasis on locally sourced and organic products, highlighting the region's raw materials.

Folk music and Salento pizzica

The evenings are brought to life by performances from Salento folk music groups: tambourines, accordions, and traditional songs set the rhythm for the pizzica, creating a festive atmosphere that engages both young and old and represents the authentic soul of Salento.

The link with the Santa Maria Maddalena Fair

The festival is closely tied to the Santa Maria Maddalena Fair, considered one of the oldest fairs in Salento. It was established on July 22, 1752, by King Charles III of Bourbon and served for centuries as a marketplace for grain prices. Even today, the fair enlivens the village of Castiglione d'Otranto with stalls and markets, providing a historic backdrop to the gastronomic celebration.

An authentic Salento experience

Between free tastings, live music, and the atmosphere of the ancient village, the Sagra du Taraddhru offers a genuine glimpse into the popular traditions and the food and wine culture of Puglia. It is an ideal opportunity to discover the most authentic side of Salento, far from the most crowded tourist circuits, and to savor a humble, ancient product like the barley tarallo.

Sagra du Taraddhru — edition 2026
