The patronal feast of Polizzi Generosa

The San Gandolfo Festival, also known as the Fera di San Gandolfo, is the main religious celebration in Polizzi Generosa, a village in the Madonie Mountains in the province of Palermo, Sicily. It takes place every year on the third Sunday of September, honoring the town's patron saint, who has been venerated by the locals for over seven centuries. The tradition dates back to 1320, the year San Gandolfo was proclaimed the town's protector.

Who was San Gandolfo

San Gandolfo da Binasco was a Franciscan friar born in Lombardy around 1200. He arrived in Polizzi in February 1260 to preach during Lent and died shortly after, widely regarded for his holiness. Tradition tells of miracles occurring after his death, leading the people of Polizzi to elect him as their patron and protector. His relics are kept in the Mother Church in an exquisitely crafted 16th-century silver urn.

The three days of festivities

The celebrations last several days and are preceded by an octave of prayer held in the Mother Church. The heart of the festival is traditionally divided into three days:

• Saturday afternoon — the first procession featuring the 19th-century wooden statue of the Saint through the village streets.
• Sunday — a solemn celebration in the Mother Church followed by the procession of the silver urn containing the relics, accompanied by confraternities, delegations, civil and military authorities, and a large crowd of the faithful.
• Monday afternoon — the statue of San Gandolfo is carried back in procession to the hermitage dedicated to the Saint at the edge of the town.

The fair and the village atmosphere

Beyond its religious dimension, the festival retains a strong popular character: the fair (the "fera"), food stalls featuring typical Madonie products, traditional music, and the characteristic fireworks bring the three days to life. It is an occasion where the entire community of Polizzi Generosa, along with emigrants returning for the event, reconnects with their roots. San Gandolfo is celebrated by the locals several times throughout the year, including the evocative "l'Ultimu mierculu" feast, confirming the deep bond between the town and its patron.
