The patronal feast of Polizzi Generosa, a centuries-old tradition in the Madonie mountains
The San Gandolfo Festival, also known as the Fera di San Gandolfo, is the main religious celebration in Polizzi Generosa, a village in the Madonie Mountains in the province of Palermo, Sicily. It takes place every year on the third Sunday of September, honoring the town's patron saint, who has been venerated by the locals for over seven centuries. The tradition dates back to 1320, the year San Gandolfo was proclaimed the town's protector.
San Gandolfo da Binasco was a Franciscan friar born in Lombardy around 1200. He arrived in Polizzi in February 1260 to preach during Lent and died shortly after, widely regarded for his holiness. Tradition tells of miracles occurring after his death, leading the people of Polizzi to elect him as their patron and protector. His relics are kept in the Mother Church in an exquisitely crafted 16th-century silver urn.
The celebrations last several days and are preceded by an octave of prayer held in the Mother Church. The heart of the festival is traditionally divided into three days:
Beyond its religious dimension, the festival retains a strong popular character: the fair (the "fera"), food stalls featuring typical Madonie products, traditional music, and the characteristic fireworks bring the three days to life. It is an occasion where the entire community of Polizzi Generosa, along with emigrants returning for the event, reconnects with their roots. San Gandolfo is celebrated by the locals several times throughout the year, including the evocative "l'Ultimu mierculu" feast, confirming the deep bond between the town and its patron.
The 2026 San Gandolfo Festival in Polizzi Generosa will take place around the third Sunday of September, with the main day on Sunday, September 20, 2026. The customary three-day structure is confirmed: the first procession of the Saint on Saturday afternoon, the solemn procession of the silver urn with the relics on Sunday, and the return of the statue to the hermitage on Monday.
