The grand medieval and Franciscan re-enactment in the alleys of Gangi
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year, the historic center of Gangi, a stunning village in the Madonie Park in the province of Palermo, turns into a grand open-air theater. "Vivere in Assisi" is a historical, medieval, and Franciscan re-enactment that transports visitors back to the 13th century, guiding them along a narrative path through the town's alleys, stairways, and squares. More than a simple costume parade, it is an experience of the spirit and the soul: an invitation to live, if only for a moment, the light and simplicity of the message of Francis of Assisi.
Along the route, dozens of costumed performers bring scenes from the Saint's life to life. The event blends theater, dance, song, poetry, and monologues, with staged areas that lead the audience on a journey between Heaven and Earth. The ancient architecture of the Madonie village becomes the natural backdrop for a story that unites history, art, culture, and faith.
Reaching its thirteenth edition in 2025, "Vivere in Assisi" is organized by the Centro Studi Francescani e Medievali, chaired by Roberto Franco, with artistic direction by Santi Cicardo. Recognized nationally and internationally for its originality, attention to detail, and evocative power, it is considered one of the most important historical-religious events in Sicily and attracts thousands of visitors to the heart of the Madonie every year.
The setting for the re-enactment is Gangi, elected "Borgo dei Borghi" (Village of Villages) in 2014 and one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Perched on Monte Marone, with its stone houses cascading down the slope, the town offers a rare and charming scenery that amplifies the medieval atmosphere of the event, making it an ideal destination for those wishing to discover the Sicilian hinterland.
The 2026 edition of "Vivere in Assisi" does not yet have official dates published. Historically, the re-enactment takes place at the end of September along the alleys and squares of the historic center of Gangi, in the Madonie. 2026 coincides with the eighth centenary of the passing of Francis of Assisi (1226-2026), which closes the cycle of major Franciscan commemorations: an anniversary that makes the anticipation for the next edition even more heartfelt. The detailed program and dates will be communicated by the Centro Studi Francescani e Medievali on the official channels of the event.
Gangi is located in the heart of the Madonie, in the province of Palermo. By car, it can be reached from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Tremonzelli or Irosa exit) and then via internal provincial roads. The nearest train station is Gangi-Geraci (Palermo-Catania line), located a few kilometers from the center.
Admission to the re-enactment requires a ticket, with online booking recommended on the official website and on ciaotickets.it. In the 2025 edition, tickets were free for children aged 0 to 5, €9 for ages 6-11, and €11 for ages 12 and up.
The event takes place in the historic center, with uphill paths and stone paving: comfortable shoes are recommended. It is advisable to arrive early to park in areas outside the center and to plan a visit to the village of Gangi.
