A patronal feast in the heart of the Nissena region

The Saint Catherine of Alexandria Festival is the most heartfelt religious and popular event in Santa Caterina Villarmosa, a town in the Province of Caltanissetta nestled in the hills of inland Sicily. The bond between the town and its patron is inscribed in the very name of the municipality: the Alexandrian virgin and martyr has watched over the local community for centuries, and every year, the town dedicates a celebration to her that unites devotion, identity, and hospitality.

The Date: September 25th

Although the liturgy commemorates Saint Catherine of Alexandria on November 25th, the main festivities in Santa Caterina Villarmosa take place on September 25th. This shift dates back to 1922, when it was decided to celebrate the patron saint during a milder season, away from the harsh winter, to encourage the participation of the community and returning emigrants. The saint was proclaimed patron of the town on January 2, 1908, by Pope Pius X, and since then, the festival has marked one of the most important moments in the town's calendar.

The evening procession and decorated balconies

The highlight is the evening procession of the saint's statue, which, after Holy Mass in the Mother Church, slowly winds through the streets of the historic center. Along the route, white sheets flutter from the balconies of the most devout families, and illuminations are lit in a gesture of hospitality and faith that transforms the town into a stage of light. The statue, accompanied by confraternities, the marching band, and crowds of the faithful, collects prayers and offerings along the way.

Music, dancing, and fireworks

Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers a rich entertainment program: musical performances and dancing in the square enliven the evening, while the day concludes with an eagerly awaited fireworks display that lights up the sky above the town. The "Vampe di Santa Caterina"

An ancient custom linked to the saint is renewed in late autumn, around November 24th: the "Vampe di Santa Caterina", large bonfires that young people, divided by neighborhood, light in various parts of the town. It is a ritual of fire and community that recalls centuries-old peasant traditions and completes the deep bond between Santa Caterina Villarmosa and its patron.
