Devotion, cuccìa, and ucchiuzzi in the village of the Madonie

In the hilltop village of Polizzi Generosa, perched over 900 meters high in the heart of the Madonie Park in the province of Palermo, the Saint Lucy Festival is one of the most heartfelt winter traditions. Celebrated on December 12th and 13th, it weaves together religious devotion, folk tradition, and culinary culture in one of the events that best captures the deep soul of this corner of Sicily.
On the evening of the eve, December 12th, Polizzi families prepare the traditional cuccìa, a soup made from wheat, chickpeas, and dried fagioli a Badda—a local legume and Slow Food Presidium. The name cuccìa comes from the dialect word coccio, meaning grain, as wheat is the star of this dish. The tradition is linked to an ancient Sicilian legend: a famine was said to have ended on Saint Lucy's Day when ships loaded with grain entered the port. Hence the custom of eating whole grains instead of bread and flour-based products.
The festival day is marked by solemn mass celebrated in the Church of the SS. Crocifisso, the community's spiritual hub. Throughout the day, ucchiuzzi di Santa Lucia are distributed—eye-shaped cookies that recall the saint's connection to the protection of sight. This is followed by the blessing of the eyes, a ritual particularly dear to the faithful, reflecting the meaning of the name Lucy, from the Latin lux, light.
As dusk falls, the procession comes to life: the statue of Saint Lucy is carried on the shoulders of the Confraternity members, recognizable by their elegant green cloaks, accompanied by devout women in a moving parade through the streets of the historic center. It is the most solemn and identity-defining moment of the festival, gathering the entire community of Polizzi Generosa around its saint.
The festival is also an opportunity to visit Polizzi Generosa, known as the city of art: the Mother Church houses a famous Flemish triptych and a marble sarcophagus by Domenico Gagini, while local gastronomy offers the sfoglio polizzano, Madonie hazelnuts, and the fagiolo badda. A popular festival that unites faith, flavors, and landscape in one of the most fascinating villages of inland Sicily.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Lucy Festival in Polizzi Generosa does not yet have an official program published. As it is a fixed-date event, celebrations traditionally take place around December 13th, with the eve on the 12th. Please refer to the channels of the Municipality of Polizzi Generosa and the parish community for the final times of the solemn mass, the blessing of the eyes, and the procession.
