The autumn festival of the patron saint of Castel di Lucio, featuring processions, the Ballatedda, and a traditional fair

In Castel di Lucio, a village of Norman origin perched in the Nebrodi mountains in the province of Messina, the cult of San Placido is renewed twice a year. The August celebration, known as San Placido 'u granni', coincides with the return of emigrants and gathers thousands of faithful; the October event, the San Placido 'u picciddu' Festival, is the more intimate celebration cherished by the local community, held annually around October 5th. The relics of the Benedictine martyr arrived in Castel di Lucio in January 1950, establishing him as the patron saint of the community. During this autumn recurrence, his sister Santa Flavia is venerated alongside him as co-patron of this edition.
The days leading up to the festival are marked by ancient rites that define the village's identity:
On the day of the festival, the solemn procession winds through the historic center with the participation of confraternities, clergy, and civil and military authorities: the statue reaches the church of Santa Lucia before returning to the Mother Church. There is also the evocative children's procession, featuring smaller statues of San Placido and Santa Flavia and their own dance. The celebration is preceded on October 4th by the historic San Placido Fair, a market of agricultural products and livestock that testifies to the rural and pastoral vocation of the Nebrodi. The festivities are completed by the vippite (stops offering cookies, wine, and roasted chickpeas), fireworks, and the traditional auction of animals donated to the saint as a vow.
The San Placido 'u picciddu' Festival is one of the most authentic expressions of popular religiosity in the municipality of Castel di Lucio and the Messina hinterland. In a village of a few hundred inhabitants, the festival becomes the moment when the community of the province of Messina, in Sicily, reaffirms its roots through devotion, brass band music, and traditions passed down from generation to generation.
The 2026 edition of the San Placido 'u picciddu' Festival in Castel di Lucio, in the province of Messina, is expected to follow its usual autumn schedule around October 5th. Detailed dates and programs have not yet been published: the festival is expected to feature traditional rites, from the Calata a cira on the eve to the solemn procession with the Ballatedda, and the San Placido Fair. For updates, please refer to the channels of the Municipality of Castel di Lucio.
Castel di Lucio is located in the Nebrodi mountains, in the hinterland of the province of Messina. The festival takes place every year around October 5th, with the eve on October 4th (Calata a cira and San Placido Fair).
The events are held in the historic center, around the Mother Church: it is recommended to park on the outskirts of the village and continue on foot. For updated dates and times, it is advisable to check the channels of the Municipality of Castel di Lucio.
