The Madonie village of Alimena celebrates the prickly pear and the traditional masticuttè sweet
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of the Madonie mountains, along the border between the provinces of Palermo and Caltanissetta, the village of Alimena dedicates an entire autumn day to the fruit that best represents Sicily: the prickly pear. The Prickly Pear and Masticuttè Festival, organized by the Pro Loco Alimena with the support of the local municipality, has become a staple of the Madonie festival calendar: a popular celebration blending gastronomy, music, art, and rural tradition.
The sweet heart of the event is masticuttè, a jelly-like candy made from concentrated prickly pear juice. The name itself refers to cooked must and reflects an ancient preparation process requiring time, patience, and the Sicilian sun. Flavored with cinnamon or enriched with toasted almonds, masticuttè is a symbol of a culture that has transformed the land into flavor for generations. Alongside it, the festival menu offers a tasting journey entirely built around the prickly pear: appetizers, risotto with prickly pear juice and pancetta, meatballs made with the fruit's peel, fried rinds, artisanal cookies, and prickly pear liqueur.
The festival takes place at the Villa Comunale in Alimena and brings the entire village to life from morning until late at night. The program alternates between food and craft stalls, cooking shows, creative workshops for children, local art exhibitions, and a live painting competition. Piazza Regina Margherita hosts vintage cars and motorcycles, while the Youth Council leads guided tours of the historic center. The day's soundtrack is provided by folk music groups and street bands, leading up to the grand evening finale.
A small town in the province of Palermo, Alimena stands at an altitude of over 700 meters in a position that acts as a gateway between the Madonie Park and the inland area of Caltanissetta. Visiting the festival is also an opportunity to discover an authentic village, far from mass tourism circuits, and to taste a fruit that here is not just food, but a collective identity. The event, which reached its fifth edition in 2025, confirms the deep bond between Alimena and its prickly pears.
At the moment, the Pro Loco Alimena has not yet published the official dates for the 2026 edition of the Prickly Pear and Masticuttè Festival. It has been announced on official channels that the 2026 program will be released shortly. The festival usually takes place in October at the Villa Comunale in Alimena (PA) and, following the structure of past editions, includes a prickly pear-based tasting menu, the masticuttè sweet, cooking shows, folk music, and art exhibitions. Check back for updates as soon as information is confirmed.
