Six months of celebrations and plenary indulgence for Italy's only sanctuary dedicated to the Holy Spirit
In 2026, the town of Gangi, in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, at the heart of the Madonie Park, celebrates a once-in-a-lifetime event: the Jubilee for the 450th anniversary of the dedication of the Sanctuary of the Holy Spirit. From April 18 to October 18, 2026, for six months, this Madonie village—one of the most beautiful in Italy—becomes a destination for pilgrimage and a place of deep spiritual renewal for the local community and the faithful arriving from all over Sicily.
The Sanctuary of the Holy Spirit, built on the slopes of Monte Marone, is considered the only sanctuary in Italy dedicated to the Third Person of the Most Holy Trinity. Its dedication dates back to the 16th century, and it has since represented the heart of Gangi's spiritual and cultural identity. The 450 years since its consecration offer an opportunity to rediscover the history, popular devotion, and the historical, artistic, and religious heritage preserved in this place.
At the request of the Diocese of Cefalù, Pope Leo XIV has granted, through the Apostolic Penitentiary, a Plenary Indulgence to all the faithful who, during the Jubilee period, make a pilgrimage to the Sanctuary while fulfilling the usual conditions required by the Church. As the rector, Father Giuseppe Amato, Archpriest of Gangi, stated, "The Plenary Indulgence granted by the Holy Father is a sign of the maternal solicitude of the Church and a precious opportunity to renew faith and hope."
The entire Jubilee Year is developed around the theme "People on the journey, regenerated by the Spirit." Throughout the six months, moments of prayer, liturgical celebrations, pilgrimages, and pastoral initiatives are promoted to enhance the history, spirituality, and role of the Sanctuary in the life of the territory. Particular attention is paid to young people: students from the local comprehensive school have taken part in visits and educational paths at the Sanctuary, also receiving a comic book created to tell the legendary origins of the site.
The official opening of the Jubilee period took place on April 18, 2026, in the presence of Monsignor Giuseppe Marciante, Bishop of Cefalù. A central place in the Jubilee calendar belongs to the traditional Festival of the Holy Spirit, with the procession of statues and the evocative rite of the "Miracula" on the sanctuary's churchyard, a moment that attracts thousands of faithful every year. The closing of the Jubilee is set for October 18, 2026.
The 2026 edition coincides with the extraordinary Jubilee Year called for the 450th anniversary of the dedication of the Sanctuary of the Holy Spirit in Gangi, the only one in Italy dedicated to the Third Person of the Most Holy Trinity. The Jubilee period opens on April 18 and concludes on October 18, 2026.
The official opening, on April 18, took place in the presence of Monsignor Giuseppe Marciante, Bishop of Cefalù. Pope Leo XIV, through the Apostolic Penitentiary, has granted a Plenary Indulgence to the faithful on pilgrimage to the Sanctuary who fulfill the usual conditions of the Church.
Under the theme "People on the journey, regenerated by the Spirit," moments of prayer, liturgical celebrations, pilgrimages, and pastoral initiatives follow one another throughout the period. Among the events on the calendar is the traditional Festival of the Holy Spirit with the procession of statues and the rite of the "Miracula." Numerous initiatives are aimed at young people: in May, students from the Gangi comprehensive school visited the Sanctuary for educational paths on the history and devotion of the place, receiving a comic book dedicated to the origins of the Sanctuary.
The Jubilee is divided into six months of events, from April 18 to October 18, 2026, with the theme "People on the journey, regenerated by the Spirit."
The detailed calendar of individual events is updated by the Sanctuary and the parish of Gangi throughout the period.
Gangi (PA) is located in the heart of the Madonie. By car from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway, take the Tremonzelli exit, then the SS120 towards Gangi: from Palermo about 1h 45m, from Catania about 1h 30m. The Sanctuary of the Holy Spirit stands on the slopes of Monte Marone, at the entrance to the town.
The Jubilee period runs from April 18 to October 18, 2026. Pilgrimages, liturgical celebrations, and initiatives take place throughout the six months; for the updated calendar, it is advisable to contact the Sanctuary or the parish of Gangi.
To obtain the Plenary Indulgence, one must make a pilgrimage to the Sanctuary during the Jubilee period and fulfill the usual conditions required by the Church (sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion, and prayer according to the intentions of the Holy Father).
Comfortable shoes are recommended for reaching the Sanctuary along the uphill streets of the village. The historic center of Gangi is worth a visit, as are the other treasures of the Madonie.
