The village of love and citrus fruits celebrates its patron saint
Perched among the olive and citrus groves of the Gargano National Park, Vico del Gargano (Foggia province, Puglia) is known throughout Italy as the "village of love." Every year, around February 14th, the small medieval village dresses up to celebrate Saint Valentine, its patron saint and protector of lovers and the precious citrus crops that define the local landscape.
The devotion dates back to 1618: to protect their citrus groves from winter frosts and harsh weather, the inhabitants asked Pope Paul V for a patron saint. The choice fell on Saint Valentine, who has watched over the village and its fruits ever since. For four centuries, the streets of the historic center have been adorned with branches of oranges, lemons, and laurel, turning Vico into a true garden of love.
The most evocative moment of the festival is the solemn procession on February 14th, when the statue of the saint is carried through the alleys on a majestic throne decorated with over five hundred kilograms of Gargano oranges and lemons, a canopy crafted with care by local artisans. Upon returning to the Mother Church, the blessing of the citrus groves and fireworks seal the ritual, amidst prayers, songs, and the festive participation of the entire community.
The absolute stars are the PGI citrus fruits of the Gargano, in particular the Gargano Blond Orange and the Gargano Femminello Lemon, among the oldest varieties in Italy: they are used in desserts, liqueurs, and traditional dishes, and scent every corner of the village.
The symbol of the festival is the famous Alley of the Kiss, a passage about thirty meters long and just fifty centimeters wide, so narrow that lovers are "forced" to brush against each other and exchange a kiss. Legend has it that those who kiss in this corner will remain faithful for life. A rich secular program develops around the religious aspect: artistic and pastry workshops, walks through the citrus groves, romantic candlelight dinners, charity tastings, and street music.
The heart of the secular program is Terrarancia, the market dedicated to the food, wine, and craft excellence of the Gargano, set up along Corso Umberto, Largo Fuoriporta, and Piazza Castello. Amidst stalls, flavors, and citrus scents, the village of Vico del Gargano offers an experience that unites faith, tradition, tourism, and community in the heart of Puglia.
The 2026 edition confirmed Vico del Gargano as the Puglian capital of love. The program intertwined religious rites and civil events, with the Terrarancia market set up in the historic center and the grand procession on February 14th, Saint Valentine's Day, culminating in the blessing of the citrus groves. There was no shortage of workshops, walks through the groves, and festive moments among the alleys decorated with oranges and lemons.
