The festival of the sea and the fishermen of Vieste
The Santa Maria Stella Maris Festival is one of the most cherished celebrations in Vieste, a town in the Province of Foggia overlooking the Gargano promontory in Apulia. Dedicated to the Madonna of fishermen and sailors, the festival blends popular devotion with the deep bond that has always connected the Vieste community to the sea. The tradition, active since the nineties, is carried out by the S. Maria Stella Maris Festival Committee and involves the entire local seafaring community.
The heart of the event is the sea procession: after a solemn mass, the statue of the Madonna is carried in a procession through the streets of the historic center to the Port of Vieste, where it is embarked and accompanied out to sea by dozens of fishing boats and festively decorated vessels. During the navigation, the blessing of the boats takes place, along with the moving casting of a wreath into the sea in memory of those lost at sea, while ship sirens echo across the gulf. It is a ritual that renews the pact between the fishermen and their protector every year.
In the days leading up to the festival, the novena and liturgical celebrations take place at the SS. Sacramento parish, featuring the enthronement of the statue and evening masses that accompany the faithful until the solemn day. The functions are tied to the historic Marian devotion of the Capitanata region, where religious festivals mark the beginning and end of the working seasons at sea.
Alongside the rites, the festival offers a rich public program: the fish festival along the pier, concerts and folk performances, the town band parade, musical evenings, and games for children. The grand finale is provided by fireworks at midnight over the tourist port, illuminating the waters of Vieste and bringing three days of celebration to a beautiful close.
The Santa Maria Stella Maris Festival is not just a religious anniversary, but a moment of great collective participation that draws residents and tourists alike during the first weekend of September. Between prayer, maritime tradition, delicious fish, and performances by the sea, it is the ideal opportunity to discover the authentic soul of Vieste and its millennial relationship with the Adriatic.
The 2026 Santa Maria Stella Maris Festival returns to Vieste from September 4th to 6th, confirming the appointment for the first weekend of September at the Port. As per tradition, the program will combine religious rites in honor of the Madonna of the fishermen with the striking sea procession and the blessing of the vessels, accompanied by public festivities: a fish festival, performances, and fireworks over the sea.
The detailed 2026 program (times for celebrations, novena, musical events, and performances) will be published by the S. Maria Stella Maris Festival Committee in the weeks preceding the festival. This page will be updated as soon as the full calendar is released.
