About Fanoje of Capurso

La Fanoje is the oldest festival in Capurso, in the province of Bari: an ancient fire ritual that marks the beginning of the Christmas season every year around the eve of the Immaculate Conception. In the historic center, in front of the Reale Basilica della Madonna del Pozzo, large bonfires are lit in Piazza Gramsci and the Villa Comunale, accompanied by folk music, flag-wavers, street performers, tastings of local products, and a Santa Claus Village. A rural tradition revived as a public festival since 2002.

La Fanoje, the fire ritual that ignites Christmas in Capurso

La Fanoje is perhaps the oldest festival in Capurso, a town in the province of Bari, Puglia. Every year, at the beginning of December and around the eve of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, the historic center and the area in front of the Reale Basilica della Madonna del Pozzo become the heart of an ancient fire ritual that gathers locals and visitors around large bonfires. For the Capurso community, this moment symbolically marks the start of the Christmas season, filled with folk music, authentic flavors, and conviviality.

Origin and meaning of a rural tradition

La Fanoje has its roots in an ancient rural tradition: on the evening of December 7th, preparations for the Christmas celebrations would begin. Once, bonfiresโ€”the "fanoje"โ€”were lit on every street in town, proudly prepared by neighborhood residents with the help of farmers who brought olive branches and vine clippings from the countryside. According to legend, the bonfires helped the Virgin Mary dry the Baby Jesus' diapers, and in a more secular interpretation, they served to ward off evil spirits from the town. Fire represented purification and was considered a good omen for the new year of work in the fields and stables.

From the neighborhoods to Piazza Gramsci: the revival since 2002

Once the fanoje had burned down on the street, a vast carpet of glowing embers remained, which everyone would use to fill a brazier to keep the flame of faith alive and warm their homes throughout the night. Since 2002, the Municipality of Capurso has revived this tradition with a true public festival that involves associations, merchants, residents, and tourists. Today, the great historical bonfire is lit in Piazza Gramsci, the oldest square in town, accompanied by a second fanoje in the Villa Comunale.

The program: bonfires, the Enchanted Village, and Santa's Grotto

The event spans two days. Alongside the lighting of the fanoje, there are fire shows, flag-waver performances, street artists, tastings, and traditional food. In the alleys of the historic center, the "Borgo d'Incanto" (Enchanted Village) comes to lifeโ€”a competition for citizens, associations, and schools that transforms the narrow streets into an evocative path of lights, decorations, nativity scenes, sounds, and Christmas scents, open until Epiphany. For children, the Santa Claus Village opens in the Villa Comunale, featuring creative workshops, shows, and meetings with Santa and his elves.

Traditional flavors

Around the fire, the ritual of old-fashioned food is also renewed: fresedde, fried chickpeas, and onion calzone, accompanied by a good glass of wine. In recent years, the festival has also hosted the "La migliore Assassina" championship, dedicated to spaghetti all'assassina, one of the iconic dishes of Bari's cuisine. It is an event that combines faith, rural memory, and Apulian gastronomy, capable of involving the entire community of Capurso.
