The festival of Santa Lucia's traditional sweets in the historic center of Triggiano

On the day of Saint Lucy, December 13th, the historic center of Triggiano (Metropolitan City of Bari, Puglia) lights up with a celebration that blends devotion, culinary tradition, and folklore. The Santa Lucia Occhietti Festival and Artisan Nativity Scene Exhibition draws families, curious visitors, and food lovers to the streets of the old town for an evening that truly marks the beginning of the city's Christmas atmosphere.
The absolute stars of the festival are the Santa Lucia occhietti: small, ring-shaped sweet taralli made with flour, eggs, extra virgin olive oil, and white wine, baked in the oven and then generously covered in a white glaze called sclépp in the local dialect, made from water, sugar, and egg whites. Once a staple in Bari homes throughout December, prepared with care by housewives alongside cartellate and castagnelle, the festival brings them back to the square to be discovered and tasted, preserving an important piece of the confectionery heritage of Bari and Puglia.
The evening begins with a solemn mass at the Santa Maria Veterana Parish, followed by a procession of the statue of Saint Lucy through the streets of the historic center. The arrival at Largo Mercato is accompanied by songs, folk music, and entertainment for children. A nativity scene comes to life in the small church dedicated to the Saint, while the artisan nativity scene exhibition can be admired along the route. One of the most evocative moments is the opportunity to visit the hypogea of Triggiano, the ancient underground structures carved into the limestone bedrock, which bear witness to the village's long history.
The Occhietti Festival is more than just a celebration; it has always had a charitable vocation. Proceeds from the tastings are donated to local heritage restoration projects, such as the restoration of the painting and the small church dedicated to Saint Lucy. Organized by the Maria SS. della Madia cultural association together with the Santa Maria Veterana parish and with the patronage of the Municipality of Triggiano, the event has become a twenty-year tradition in the city's calendar.
