The patronal feast of Caltanissetta, blending faith, tradition, and the procession of barefoot devotees
The Saint Michael the Archangel Patronal Feast is the most anticipated religious and popular event of the year in Caltanissetta, the capital of the province of the same name in the heart of Sicily. Celebrated on September 29th, the day dedicated to the Archangel, it unites the entire community around its protector, who has been venerated without interruption for four centuries.
According to tradition, Saint Michael became the city's patron in 1625, during a devastating plague epidemic. It is said that the Capuchin friar Francesco Giarratana had a vision of a soldier using his sword to repel a plague victim attempting to sneak into the city: that soldier was the Archangel Michael. Since then, the people of Caltanissetta have credited him with their salvation from the contagion and named him their patron. The devotion is so deeply rooted that the city also celebrates the Saint on May 8th, the Feast of the Apparition.
The absolute protagonist of the feast is the wooden statue of the Archangel, a 1627 masterpiece by sculptor Stefano Li Volsi from Nicosia, housed in the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Nova. It depicts Saint Michael in armor and helmet defeating evil, a symbol of the triumph of good. During the procession, the heavy litter is carried on the shoulders of devoted bearers, many of whom complete the route barefoot as a vow, chanting the traditional cry in the local dialect: "E gridammu tutti! Viva u Principi San Michele Arcangilu".
The feast follows a well-established ritual:
The devotional organization is historically managed by groups such as the Deputazione di San Michele, the Sacra Lega di San Michele, and the Association of Devoted Bearers.
During the same period, the traditional Saint Michael Fair takes place, with medieval origins linked to the end of the agricultural season. Stalls, local products, and a market bring the city to life, intertwining the religious dimension with popular and commercial traditions.
Witnessing the Saint Michael procession in Caltanissetta means immersing yourself in one of the most authentic expressions of Sicilian religiosity: a blend of faith, the physical endurance of the bearers, popular devotion, and the warmth of an entire city. It is an experience that tells the story of the soul of inland Sicily better than any guidebook.
The Saint Michael the Archangel Feast returns to Caltanissetta on September 29, 2026, confirming its fixed place in the liturgical and city calendar. The patron saint is celebrated with the traditional morning pontifical mass in the Cathedral, attended by authorities, and with the solemn evening procession through the historic center, during which the wooden statue is carried on the shoulders of devotees, many of whom walk barefoot.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition (celebration times, procession route, Saint Michael Fair events, and fireworks display) will be announced by the Diocese of Caltanissetta and the devotional associations in the weeks preceding the feast.
