September Marian devotion and the prickly pear pastry that tells the story of Resuttano
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Feast of Maria SS. Addolorata is the most anticipated event of the year in Resuttano, a village of just over two thousand inhabitants nestled at an altitude of over 640 meters in the hinterland of the Caltanissetta province, in Sicily. The occasion is linked to the liturgical feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, celebrated on September 15th, but the festivities span several days, weaving together religious, popular, and gastronomic traditions.
The statue of the Madonna Addolorata is kept in the Church of San Paolo Apostolo and serves as a central reference point for local popular piety. The most solemn moment is the procession of the statue through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by local confraternities and a large turnout of the faithful, culminating on September 15th.
Alongside the Marian devotion, the Resuttano festival is known for the Masticuttino Festival (the plural in dialect is masticuttina): traditional small pastries prepared with prickly pear juice, a symbol of the village's culinary culture. Distributed during the festivities, they are considered true ambassadors of local taste and history, attracting visitors from the nearby Madonie and Nisseno areas.
The secular festivities complement the religious program with a rich array of entertainment. In recent years, the Resuttano stage has hosted nationally renowned artists: the 2025 edition featured DJ and producer Mario Fargetta, singer-songwriter Amedeo Minghi, and comedian Sasร Salvaggio, while 2024 saw Orietta Berti as the star of her summer tour. The program also includes DJ sets, musical entertainment, and the traditional fireworks display to close the celebrations.
Organized by the ecclesiastical community of Resuttano with the support of the Municipality of Resuttano, the festival is a moment of strong cohesion for the village and for the emigrants who return home specifically for the September celebrations. Between processions, music, and the scent of prickly pear pastries, the Addolorata remains one of the defining identity events of this corner of the Sicilian hinterland.
The festivities are traditionally concentrated around September 15th. In 2025, they took place from September 12th to 15th. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced at the time of this publication: it is recommended to check for updates from the Municipality and the parish of Resuttano closer to the event.
The 2026 festivities in honor of Maria SS. Addolorata in Resuttano are expected, as every year, around September 15th. The solemn procession of the statue from the Church of San Paolo Apostolo, the Masticuttino Festival with prickly pear pastries, and the usual evening entertainment are planned. The dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been made official: updates will be released by the parish and the Municipality of Resuttano closer to the event.
Resuttano is located in the Sicilian hinterland, in the province of Caltanissetta, near the border with the Madonie. By car, it can be reached via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (take the Tremonzelli/Scillato exit and follow local roads) or via the SS 121. The Resuttano-Alimena railway station is served by the Palermo-Catania line.
Festivities take place around September 15th, the feast day of the Addolorata. Program and dates for the 2026 edition are to be confirmed by the Municipality of Resuttano.
Processions, the festival, and concerts take place outdoors in the squares and streets of the center; access to events is generally free.
