The patronal feast of Enna and the procession of the Golden Ship
The Feast of Maria Santissima della Visitazione is the heart of the religious and civic identity of Enna, the capital of its namesake province in the geographical center of Sicily. Every year, on July 2nd, the entire city gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that dates back to the 15th century and draws faithful and visitors from across the island.
The devotion in Enna replaced ancient pagan cults linked to Ceres (Demeter), of which Enna was one of the most important centers in the ancient world. According to tradition, in 1412, a city delegation traveled to Venice to purchase a fine wooden statue of the Madonna depicted without the Child, to represent the scene of the Visitation to her cousin Elizabeth. The statue, which arrived in Sicily after an adventurous sea voyage, has been the object of deep veneration for over six centuries.
Celebrations begin as early as June 29th with the transfer of the statue from the chapel to the high altar of the Cathedral. On July 2nd, the day of the feast, the religious program unfolds from dawn:
The most anticipated moment is the evening procession, when the statue, adorned with precious jewels donated by the faithful over the centuries, is placed on the famous Nave d'Oro: an imposing three-tiered gilded float, carried on the shoulders of dozens of men through the narrow streets of the medieval historic center. The procession, preceded by the statues of Saint Michael the Archangel and Saint Joseph, is punctuated by sarbiate, the cannon salutes that accompany the stops in the squares. The final uphill stretch towards the Eremo di Montesalvo is run by the bearers in a moment of great emotional intensity, where the statues of Saint Zechariah and Saint Elizabeth come out to meet the Madonna.
The festival does not end on July 2nd: a return procession, known as 'A Madonna a Muntata', brings the statue back along the main streets on the third Sunday following. Alongside the religious dimension, the city calendar offers shows, concerts, and firework displays that enliven the squares of Enna, making the day a celebration of faith and community for the entire province of Enna and Sicily.
For 2026, Enna renews its most cherished patronal feast. Religious celebrations follow the usual July 2nd program: masses in the Cathedral from dawn, the firing of 101 cannon blasts at 7:00 AM, the solemn Pontifical Mass at 10:30 AM, and at 7:00 PM, the procession of Maria SS. della Visitazione on the Golden Ship to the Eremo di Montesalvo, amidst cannon salutes and the meeting with Saint Zechariah and Saint Elizabeth.
The civic program for the summer of 2026, announced by the municipal administration, includes numerous performances: among the key events linked to the patronal feast, the concert by Ermal Meta on July 2nd has been confirmed, as part of a schedule featuring several evenings of music and culture in the city. There will also be the highly anticipated evening firework displays illuminating the sky of Enna.
Enna can be reached by car via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway, taking the Enna exit. The train station is located in the lower area (Enna Bassa); for the historic center (Enna Alta), where the festival takes place, a car or local bus is recommended. The nearest airports are Catania-Fontanarossa (approx. 80 km) and Palermo-Punta Raisi.
The festival takes place on July 2nd in the historic center of Enna, centered around the Cathedral and the processional route to the Eremo di Montesalvo. Participation in religious celebrations and the procession is free and open to all.
Arrive early to secure a spot along the route of the evening procession. Wear comfortable shoes for the steep streets of the medieval historic center.
