The historic trade fair of Caltanissetta in the heart of the patronal feast
The San Michele Fair is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of Caltanissetta, the capital of the province located in the heart of Sicily. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, when the late-September fair preceded the new plowing season and served as a vital trading hub for farmers, artisans, and merchants from the entire surrounding area. Today, the event still preserves that spirit of community and gathering, attracting visitors not only from the city but also from the neighboring provinces of Agrigento and Enna.
The fair takes place in conjunction with the patronal feast of Saint Michael the Archangel, the city's protector since 1625. This devotion began in the 17th century during a devastating plague, when, according to tradition, the Archangel appeared and repelled the scourge with his sword. The wooden statue of the saint, crafted by sculptor Stefano Li Volsi in 1627, is carried in a procession on the shoulders of the faithful, accompanied by a marching band, civil and religious authorities, and children in traditional costumes. The traditional cry of the bearers, "E gridammu tutti! Viva u Principi San Michele Arcangilu", echoes through the streets of the historic center.
The commercial heart of the event unfolds along Via Rochester, where more than a hundred stalls are set up, categorized by merchandise:
To complete the festivities, a large funfair is set up in the parking area of the Stadio Tomaselli in the Pian del Lago district. It remains open longer than the trade fair, offering rides, attractions, and street food for families and young people. Admission to the fair is free, and the municipality typically provides a shuttle bus service connecting the city center to the funfair area.
The 2026 San Michele Fair returns to Caltanissetta from Saturday, September 26 to Tuesday, September 29, with stalls set up along Via Rochester. The trade fair groups exhibitors by category: short-chain local products, handicrafts, renewable energy, services, sports promotion, non-profit associations, hobbyists, and a food area with on-site dining. The highlight is September 29, the day of the patronal feast of Saint Michael the Archangel, featuring the solemn procession of the saint's statue through the city center. The funfair at Pian del Lago, located at the Stadio Tomaselli parking lot, remains open for a longer period, approximately from September 26 to early October.
The usual structure of the event includes:
The detailed religious and civil program, including schedules for celebrations and activities, will be published by the Municipality of Caltanissetta in the weeks leading up to the event.
