The patronal feast of San Cataldo and the historic "Fera Ranni"
In the heart of inland Sicily, in the province of Caltanissetta, the town of San Cataldo celebrates its Patron and Protector every year: the Most Holy Crucifix. The main event falls on the second Sunday of October, when the entire community renews its dedication to the Crucifix, carried solemnly in procession through the streets of the historic center. It is one of three moments in the year when the simulacrum is displayed and carried in a procession: the blessing of the Crucifix is repeated on January 1st, May 10th (the day of Saint Cataldo), and, most importantly, on this autumn Sunday.
The festivities begin with the opening of the great reliquary kept in the Mother Church, which contains the venerated relics of Saints and Martyrs. At the center of the reliquary is a precious ivory crucifix, a sculpture of the Roman school, exposed for the devotion of the faithful throughout the festival. The Mother Church, dating back to the 17th century, stands at the highest and most central point of the city and represents the spiritual hub of these days.
Spiritual preparation follows a triduum in the Mother Church, marked by the Holy Rosary, Eucharistic celebrations, and moments of sacred music with city choirs. The most intense moment arrives on Sunday in the late afternoon, with the solemn Eucharistic Concelebration in the presence of civil and military authorities. Immediately after, the procession begins with the precious relics and the large Crucifix, winding along the traditional route called the "Way of the Saints" and concluding in Piazza Madrice with a blessing over the city.
The religious dimension is accompanied by the historic October Fair, known to the locals as the "Fera Ranni" (the Great Fair). For four days, the Santa Germana district, along Viale dei Platani and the surrounding streets, transforms into a large open-air market: stalls with food and non-food products, a vast area dedicated to fairground rides and traveling shows, and an increasingly rich food zone. It is a deeply felt event for the community of the Caltanissetta province, attracting visitors from all neighboring towns.
The Festival of the Most Holy Crucifix in San Cataldo is the perfect synthesis of the Sicilian soul, where the sacred and the profane coexist: the quiet devotion of the procession and the boisterous joy of the fair. For those visiting inland Sicily in autumn, it is the ideal opportunity to discover the traditions of an authentic Sicilian village, far from the most beaten tourist paths.
The patronal feast of San Cataldo will be held on Sunday, October 11, 2026, coinciding with the second Sunday of the month. The day will culminate, as per tradition, with the solemn Eucharistic Concelebration and the procession of the Most Holy Crucifix along the "Way of the Saints," ending with the final blessing in Piazza Madrice.
During the same period, the October Fair ("Fera Ranni") will take place in the Santa Germana district, with stalls, fairground rides, and a food area.
The detailed program of religious and civil events will be announced by the Municipality of San Cataldo and the Most Holy Crucifix Archpriest's office in the weeks leading up to the festival.
