The patronal festival of Montedoro in honor of Mary Most Holy of the Rosary
In the heart of inland Sicily, at an altitude of about 450 meters and just a few kilometers from the provincial capital, the town of Montedoro (Province of Caltanissetta) preserves one of the most heartfelt religious traditions in the Nisseno area: the Madonna del Rosario Festival, the town's patron saint. Every year, on the first Sunday of October, the entire village gathers around the statue of Mary Most Holy of the Rosary for an event that blends popular devotion, music, and spectacle.
The first celebrations in honor of the Madonna del Rosario date back to the very founding of Montedoro in 1635, commissioned by Prince Don Diego Tagliavia Aragona Cortez in the fief of Balatazza. For nearly four centuries, the community has renewed this bond with its protector in a town shaped by the long era of sulfur mines, which made Montedoro one of the island's most important mining centers between the 19th and 20th centuries.
The festivities open with a preparatory triduum, during which the faithful gather for the recited Holy Rosary and Eucharistic celebrations. The torchlight procession toward the shrine of the Madonna del Rosario at the edge of town is particularly evocative. On the eve, Saturday, the brass band parades through the town to announce the start of the festival, followed in the evening by the traditional nocturnal musical procession through the streets.
The festival day begins with the collection of the 'ntorcia, an ancient tradition of gathering offerings accompanied by the band, and continues with Holy Mass at the Mother Church dedicated to Saint Mary of the Rosary. In the late afternoon, after the Solemn Mass, the most awaited moment takes place: the procession of the statue carried on a characteristic boat-shaped float, decorated with lights and flowers, through the streets of the historic center. The faithful accompany the procession with lit torches, creating an intense and prayerful atmosphere.
The festival concludes on the church square with the serenade to Mary, followed by a concert by the "Vincenzo Bellini" brass band of Montedoro and a grand fireworks display that lights up the sky over the village. The festival is organized by the Santa Maria del Rosario Parish with the support of the Municipality of Montedoro and the commitment of the "Madonna del Rosario" women's association.
Visiting Montedoro during the patronal festival means discovering the most authentic and least touristy side of Sicily: a village of a few hundred inhabitants where traditions are passed down from generation to generation, amidst mining heritage, popular faith, and the warmth of the local community.
The 2026 Madonna del Rosario Festival in Montedoro is scheduled for Sunday, October 4, 2026, in line with the custom of celebrating the patronal feast on the first Sunday of October. In the preceding days, the preparatory triduum takes place with the recitation of the Holy Rosary and Eucharistic celebrations, while the eve is animated by the brass band and the nocturnal procession.
The day of the festival includes the collection of the 'ntorcia, Holy Mass in the Mother Church, and, in the late afternoon, the solemn procession of the statue on the boat-shaped float, accompanied by the faithful with torches. The day concludes with the serenade to Mary on the church square, the concert by the "Vincenzo Bellini" band, and fireworks. The detailed schedule for the 2026 edition will be published by the Parish in the weeks leading up to the festival.

The patronal festival is celebrated every year on the first Sunday of October, with the triduum and the eve taking place in the preceding days.
All celebrations and events are free to attend.
As it is a small village, accommodation options are limited; it is advisable to look for lodging in Caltanissetta or neighboring towns. Comfortable clothing is recommended for following the procession through the historic center.
