About Saint George Festival

Every year around April 23rd, Piana degli Albanesi celebrates Saint George the Great Martyr, patron saint of the Arbëreshë community since the late 15th century. Featuring Byzantine Greek-Catholic processions, the blessing of the horses, Sicilian drums, and medieval games, the festival culminates in the famous Dance of Saint George: the equestrian statue, carved in 1832, is carried on the shoulders of the Committee's young members through the town center to the rhythm of marches. It is one of the most identity-defining patronal festivals in Sicily, suspended between faith, folklore, and Albanian memory.

Saint George, patron of the Arbëreshë

In Piana degli Albanesi, in the heart of the Province of Palermo, the Saint George the Great Martyr Festival is much more than a patronal feast: it is the moment when the entire Arbëreshë community, of Albanian origin and settled in Sicily since the late 15th century, reaffirms its identity. Saint George has been venerated as the town's patron saint since around 1400, and his festival preserves the evocative power of the Byzantine Greek-Catholic rite unique to the Eparchy of Piana degli Albanesi, one of the few Italo-Albanian realities in Italy.

The Dance of Saint George

The most anticipated moment is the Dance of Saint George, the solemn procession on April 23rd. The sculptural group depicting the saintly knight slaying the dragon—a work by Nicolò Bagnasco signed in 1832 and considered a masterpiece of Sicilian sacred art—is carried on the shoulders of the Saint George Committee members (traditionally under 26 years old) through the historic center. To the rhythm of military marches, the bearers advance with cadenced, synchronized steps that make the statue "dance" amidst the crowd of faithful, in a sequence of devotional shouts, chants, bell ringing, and firecracker bursts.

Four days of tradition

The festivities span several days, from Friday to Monday of the solemnity. Recurring events include:

  • the blessing of horses and riders in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, featuring a parade and the "Horse Day";
  • Sicilian drums parading through the town streets;
  • medieval games and folk performances;
  • nature trails, horseback excursions, and photography exhibitions;
  • performances by the brass and percussion marching band.

Faith and folklore

The April 23rd solemnity opens with the Divine Liturgy of the Byzantine rite and continues with the pontifical mass. In the evening, after the procession, the triumphant return of the statue to the Church of Saint George is accompanied by a blessing with the Sacred Relic, kept in an 18th-century silver reliquary, and sealed by a fireworks display. In Piana degli Albanesi, where the Arbëreshë language is still spoken and centuries-old costumes and traditions are preserved, the Saint George festival remains one of the most heartfelt events in all of Sicily.
