The Arbëreshë patron saint and the Dance of Saint George in Piana degli Albanesi
In Piana degli Albanesi, in the heart of the Province of Palermo, the Saint George the Great Martyr Festival is much more than a patronal feast: it is the moment when the entire Arbëreshë community, of Albanian origin and settled in Sicily since the late 15th century, reaffirms its identity. Saint George has been venerated as the town's patron saint since around 1400, and his festival preserves the evocative power of the Byzantine Greek-Catholic rite unique to the Eparchy of Piana degli Albanesi, one of the few Italo-Albanian realities in Italy.
The most anticipated moment is the Dance of Saint George, the solemn procession on April 23rd. The sculptural group depicting the saintly knight slaying the dragon—a work by Nicolò Bagnasco signed in 1832 and considered a masterpiece of Sicilian sacred art—is carried on the shoulders of the Saint George Committee members (traditionally under 26 years old) through the historic center. To the rhythm of military marches, the bearers advance with cadenced, synchronized steps that make the statue "dance" amidst the crowd of faithful, in a sequence of devotional shouts, chants, bell ringing, and firecracker bursts.
The festivities span several days, from Friday to Monday of the solemnity. Recurring events include:
The April 23rd solemnity opens with the Divine Liturgy of the Byzantine rite and continues with the pontifical mass. In the evening, after the procession, the triumphant return of the statue to the Church of Saint George is accompanied by a blessing with the Sacred Relic, kept in an 18th-century silver reliquary, and sealed by a fireworks display. In Piana degli Albanesi, where the Arbëreshë language is still spoken and centuries-old costumes and traditions are preserved, the Saint George festival remains one of the most heartfelt events in all of Sicily.
In 2026, the festivities in honor of Saint George the Great Martyr were held from April 20th to 23rd. Sunday (April 22nd) featured the parade and the blessing of the horses in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, Sicilian drums through the town streets, medieval games, and evening shows. On Monday, April 23rd, the day of the solemnity, after the Divine Liturgy and the pontifical mass, the Dance of Saint George took place in the evening: the equestrian statue was carried on the shoulders of the Saint George Committee's young members through the historic center of Piana degli Albanesi, followed by the triumphant return to the Church of Saint George, the blessing with the Sacred Relic, and the concluding fireworks.
Piana degli Albanesi (PA) is about 30 km from Palermo. By car, it can be reached via the A29 motorway (exit towards Altofonte/Piana degli Albanesi) or the SS624. Bus connections from Palermo are available via suburban lines.
Festivities are concentrated around April 23rd, the patron saint's day, with events occurring in the preceding days.
Events and the procession are free and open to the public in the historic center streets.
