The Norman historical re-enactment of Monreale featuring costume parades, medieval music, and falconry
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the Sign of William is the historical re-enactment that every autumn brings Monreale, in the province of Palermo, back to its peak of splendor: the Norman rule and the reign of William II of Hauteville, known as the Good. The event celebrates the sovereign who commissioned the construction of the Cathedral of Monreale, the extraordinary Arab-Norman complex consecrated to the Virgin Mary and now inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. For a few days, the town's historic center dresses up for the occasion and becomes an authentic open-air medieval village.
The heart of the event is the grand historical parade in costume, which winds through the streets of the town with ladies, knights, men-at-arms, and performers, recreating the atmosphere of the Norman court of Sicily. Along the squares and alleys, period encampments, artisan workshops, and medieval markets come to life, while the public is accompanied by a series of activities and shows designed for all ages:
The re-enactment is rooted in a pivotal episode of the city's history: the donation and consecration of the Cathedral commissioned by William II, a symbol of the encounter between Latin, Greek, and Arab cultures that characterizes Norman Sicily. Promoted by the Municipality of Monreale with the involvement of local associations, the event combines heritage promotion, entertainment, and popular participation, confirming itself as one of the most evocative autumn appointments in the Sicily Region.
With its scenic setup, free admission, and a program spread across the streets of the center, "In the Sign of William" is an ideal proposal for families, history buffs, and tourists visiting Monreale and its famous Cathedral. The re-enactment offers the opportunity to discover the town in an unusual guise, amidst re-enactments, flavors, and atmospheres of times past, just a few kilometers from Palermo.
The historical re-enactment In the Sign of William returns to Monreale, in the province of Palermo, with a new appointment expected for autumn 2026.
