The 'processione ri mazzuna' and the Mattutino: two days of popular devotion in Altofonte
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year in Altofonte, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo nestled at the foot of the Conca d'Oro, the Immaculate Conception Festival transforms the historic center into a grand collective rite of faith and community. The rituals are preserved by the Congregation of Maria SS. Immacolata, a confraternity founded in 1778 by Father Bartolomeo Gioito, which still guides the most important moments of the festivities today. This devotion is rooted in an ancient Sicilian popular tradition, composed of gestures, scents, and flavors passed down through generations.
The heart of the festival is the famous processione ri mazzuna, held on the afternoon of December 7th. The vara (float) of the Immaculate is adorned with local greenery: laurel branches, murtidda (myrtle), rosemary, and oranges, in a triumph of green and fragrance that evokes the Sicilian countryside. The procession winds through the town streets, illuminated by the mazzuna bonfires—bundles of disa grass lit along the route—giving the procession an intense and deeply authentic atmosphere.
On the night between December 7th and 8th, the most characteristic moment takes place: the Mattutino, also known as the chiamata da Immaculatedda. The confreres walk through the town streets crying out, "Maria Immacolata calls you!", gathering the faithful to lead them to the church. Along the way, there are convivial stops with sfince, small cookies, and hot drinks to warm up the December night.
On the morning of December 8th, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Holy Mass is celebrated. This is the moment for vastedde, the typical focaccias seasoned with oil, cheese, or ricotta, which the community shares as a sign of celebration. The day concludes with the official procession and the traditional fireworks display that lights up the sky over Altofonte. The festival, which in some years begins as early as November 28th with the procession marking the start of the novena, remains one of the most beloved events in the Province of Palermo and all of Sicily for those seeking the authentic roots of popular religiosity.
