The patronal celebrations of the smallest Arbëreshë community in Sicily
The Saint Christina Festival is the most cherished celebration in Santa Cristina Gela, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily. Known as the smallest Arbëreshë (Italo-Albanian) community on the island, the town gathers every year around its patron saint, celebrated on July 24th, with a calendar of events spanning several days and involving the entire population along with numerous pilgrims from the surrounding area.
The cult of the Virgin and Martyr Saint Christina is deeply rooted here. The festivities are organized by the Confraternity of Saint Christina, founded in the early 20th century, and are an integral part of the spiritual life of a community linked to the Eparchy of Piana degli Albanesi and the Byzantine-Greek rite. The Mother Church, built in 1815, houses a 17th-century wooden statue of the saint holding a silver palm, the symbol of martyrdom, alongside a late 19th-century confraternity banner.
The program alternates between devotional and secular moments: the preparatory novenas in the preceding days, the performance of the Mysteries of Saint Christina, the procession of the saint's relics—donated by the Cardinal of Palermo to the community in July 1994—and, on the patron's feast day, the solemn procession of the statue through the town streets. The festivities also feature the morning alborata (dawn wake-up call), the brass band, solemn mass, and the grand fireworks display that concludes the event.
Beyond the religious dimension, the festival offers concerts, evening music in the square, shows, children's events, sporting competitions like the cycling trophy, and art exhibitions hosted in the village's historic buildings. It is also an opportunity to rediscover the gastronomic traditions and the historical and landscape heritage of this borderland between Sicilian culture and Albanian roots, in the province of Palermo.
For 2026, the community of Santa Cristina Gela renews its appointment with its patron saint around July 24th. The festival, organized by the Confraternity of Saint Christina, is spread over several days with religious and civil celebrations in the historic center of the Arbëreshë village in the province of Palermo.
Following the established structure of the festivities, the preparatory novenas, the representation of the Mysteries of Saint Christina, the procession of the relics, and the procession of the saint's statue are expected, accompanied by the brass band, solemn mass, and the traditional fireworks display. The official program for the 2026 edition, with detailed dates and times, will be released by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the festival.
