The Feast of San Giusto and Companion Martyrs is the main religious and popular event in Misilmeri, a town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, in the heart of Sicily. Every year, in the days surrounding the last Sunday of August, the historic center transforms into a stage for faith and tradition centered around the Mother Church of San Giovanni Battista, where the relics of the patron saints are kept.
Devotion to San Giusto dates back to 1671, when the relics of the martyr from Cagliariโbeheaded during the persecutions of Diocletian and discovered in the catacombs of Cagliari in 1665โwere donated to the town by the noblewoman Tommasa del Bosco Sandoval. Since then, the Municipality of Misilmeri has chosen San Giusto and the Companion Martyrs as its protectors, renewing its bond with the saint every year.
The festivities take place over several days, alternating liturgical moments with popular events. The eve is marked by the offering of wax by the confraternities and the mayor, the First Vespers, and the performance of the drummers, who bring the town streets to life. The day of the solemnity opens at dawn with the alborata, accompanied by the sound of bells and drums, culminating in the solemn celebration and the grand evening procession.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers a rich secular program: traveling street artist performances, live music, entertainment for all ages, and the inevitable stalls that enliven the summer evenings. The historic center, decorated for the occasion, becomes a meeting place for the Misilmeri community and the many visitors who reach Misilmeri from neighboring towns and the capital of Palermo every year.
The Feast of San Giusto thus represents not only an appointment of faith but also an identity heritage that tells the story and soul of Misilmeri, preserving gestures and rites handed down from generation to generation.
The 2026 edition of the Feast of San Giusto and Companion Martyrs in Misilmeri will likely follow the tradition of concentrating festivities around the last Sunday of August. At the moment, the 2026 dates and program have not yet been made official. We await announcements from the San Giovanni Battista Parish and the Municipality with details regarding the procession, liturgical rites, and popular events.
Misilmeri is located about 15 km from Palermo. By car, it can be reached via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Bagheria exit) or via the SS121. Train and bus connections are available from the capital of Palermo.
The festivities are held every year around the last Sunday of August, with the solemnity taking place on Sunday. The celebrations occur in the historic center and at the Mother Church of San Giovanni Battista.
Participation in the celebrations and public events is free.
