About Feast of San Giusto

Every year, around the last Sunday of August, Misilmeri celebrates its patron saints with the Feast of San Giusto and Companion Martyrs. Between solemn processions, the dawn 'alborata', traditional drummers, the 'flight of the angels', and the spectacular 'vara' race, the historic center of this town in the province of Palermo fills with devotion and folklore. A tradition dating back to 1671 that draws faithful and curious visitors from all over Sicily every summer.

A patronal feast spanning the centuries

The Feast of San Giusto and Companion Martyrs is the main religious and popular event in Misilmeri, a town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, in the heart of Sicily. Every year, in the days surrounding the last Sunday of August, the historic center transforms into a stage for faith and tradition centered around the Mother Church of San Giovanni Battista, where the relics of the patron saints are kept.

Devotion to San Giusto dates back to 1671, when the relics of the martyr from Cagliariโ€”beheaded during the persecutions of Diocletian and discovered in the catacombs of Cagliari in 1665โ€”were donated to the town by the noblewoman Tommasa del Bosco Sandoval. Since then, the Municipality of Misilmeri has chosen San Giusto and the Companion Martyrs as its protectors, renewing its bond with the saint every year.

Rites and traditions

The festivities take place over several days, alternating liturgical moments with popular events. The eve is marked by the offering of wax by the confraternities and the mayor, the First Vespers, and the performance of the drummers, who bring the town streets to life. The day of the solemnity opens at dawn with the alborata, accompanied by the sound of bells and drums, culminating in the solemn celebration and the grand evening procession.

  • The procession of the relics: the simulacrum and the relics of the saints travel through the main streets of the historic center, accompanied by the confraternities, the marching band, and the faithful in prayer.
  • The flight of the angels: one of the most evocative and anticipated moments, preceding the return to the Mother Church.
  • The 'vara' race: upon returning, the fercolo (processional float) is carried at a run toward the church, in a finale charged with emotion and popular participation.
  • The 'palii': long white wooden poles topped with a dove, an ancient symbol of peace and identity for the city of Misilmeri.

Folklore, music, and atmosphere

Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers a rich secular program: traveling street artist performances, live music, entertainment for all ages, and the inevitable stalls that enliven the summer evenings. The historic center, decorated for the occasion, becomes a meeting place for the Misilmeri community and the many visitors who reach Misilmeri from neighboring towns and the capital of Palermo every year.

The Feast of San Giusto thus represents not only an appointment of faith but also an identity heritage that tells the story and soul of Misilmeri, preserving gestures and rites handed down from generation to generation.
