The Nativity comes to life among the historic chapels of Altofonte, in the heart of the Palermo Christmas season

During the festive season, the town of Altofonte (Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily) comes alive with one of the winter's most cherished events: the Living Nativity organized by the community of the Santa Maria Parish of Altofonte. This is no ordinary performance, but a collective event that stages the Nativity using the most evocative spaces in the town.
The nativity trail winds through the Church of Santa Maria, the parish premises, and two chapels of great significance to the locals: the San Michele chapel and the Sacra Veglia chapel. Within these settings, traditional nativity scenes are reconstructed, from workshops of ancient crafts to daily life scenes, culminating in the manger with the Holy Family. As the organizers emphasize, the setup aims to combine tradition, beauty, and harmony.
What makes the Altofonte living nativity special is the collective participation: all the brotherhoods, movements, parish groups, the Giovanni Paolo II oratory, and numerous volunteers collaborate on its creation. It is a way to rediscover the communal spirit of Christmas and pass on the art of nativity-making, which is deeply rooted in Sicilian culture, to new generations.
The nativity display is often accompanied by musical and spiritual moments: around the dates of the performance, the mother church hosts evenings dedicated to Christmas, such as the musical event The Magic of Christmas, designed to guide the community through the holidays with traditional carols and melodies.
At the moment, the Santa Maria Parish of Altofonte has not yet released the dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Living Nativity. The event, which traditionally takes place during the Christmas season between the church of Santa Maria and the chapels of San Michele and Sacra Veglia, will be confirmed in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
To find out dates, times, and updated details, we recommend following the parish's channels. This page will be updated as soon as the official program is available.
