About Sagra del Bitto

In September, Gerola Alta celebrates its most precious cheese with the Sagra del Bitto, a historic event in Val Gerola dedicated to one of Italy's most renowned alpine cheeses. Featuring tastings, guided tours, music, folk parades, and a market of typical products, the festival showcases the cheesemaking culture of the Valtellina mountains. A journey into the flavours and traditions of the Orobie region, in the province of Sondrio.

Bitto, the gold of the Valtellina Orobie

The Sagra del Bitto in Gerola Alta (Province of Sondrio) is the festival celebrating Bitto, an alpine cheese produced for centuries in the mountain pastures of Val Gerola and Valtellina using traditional techniques. Now in its fiftieth edition, the festival is one of the most important events for understanding the cheesemaking culture of these mountains.

Flavours and traditions of the mountains

The event, organised with the support of the Pro Loco (local tourism board) and valley stakeholders, offers a rich programme:

  • Tastings of Bitto and other typical local cheeses and products;
  • Guided tours to discover the territory and cheesemaking production;
  • Music and folk parades of Valtellina tradition;
  • Market of typical mountain products.

One valley, one cheese, one identity

Bitto is more than just a cheese: it is the symbol of Val Gerola's identity and an alpine culture that endures over time. The festival highlights the work of producers and keeps alive the connection between Gerola Alta, its mountains, and its traditions, attracting food and wine enthusiasts from all over the province of Sondrio and beyond.

Sagra del Bitto — edition 2026

The 58th Sagra del Bitto is expected on September 19 and 20, 2026, in Gerola Alta, on the third weekend of September. Tastings of Bitto and typical products, guided tours, music, folk parades, and a market in Val Gerola.

The 2026 edition, the 58th, is expected on September 19 and 20, on the usual third weekend of September (the 57th was held on September 20-21, 2025). The historic centre of Gerola Alta hosts tastings of Bitto and other typical products, guided tours, music, and folk parades, as well as a market for mountain products, in a festival celebrating the cheesemaking culture of Val Gerola.
