Handmade Mugello-style tortelli grilled in the village of Sagginale
In the village of Sagginale, a cluster of houses overlooking the Sieve river in the municipality of Borgo San Lorenzo (Metropolitan City of Florence, Tuscany), summer has a distinct flavor: that of the Mugello-style tortello. The Sagginale Tortello Festival, organized by the Circolo Bianco Rosso, is one of the most deeply rooted gastronomic events in the Mugello valley—a classic village festival passed down through generations that draws families and food lovers from across the region.
The main reason to visit is the Mugello-style tortello, a large, handmade fresh pasta ravioli filled with potatoes, traditionally served with meat ragù or simply with butter and sage. It is the flagship dish of the Mugello, hearty and fragrant, prepared in Sagginale according to the timeless recipe by the volunteers of the Circolo. Alongside the tortelli, the festival features Florentine steak and various grilled meats that fill the summer air with mouth-watering aromas.
The event takes place under the marquees of the Sagginale sports field on Via Ponte d'Annibale, a setup that provides shelter from summer weather and creates the communal dining atmosphere typical of Tuscan festivals. Food stalls are primarily open for dinner: you arrive, sit at long tables, order, and chat with your neighbors between courses. Admission is free, and the atmosphere is simple and authentic, far from tourist traps and close to the real life of the village.
Borgo San Lorenzo is the main hub of the Mugello, a land of forests, Romanesque churches, and farming traditions at the gates of Florence. The Sagginale Tortello Festival is part of the busy summer calendar of village festivals in the municipality and represents a perfect opportunity to discover the authentic cuisine of this corner of Tuscany, perhaps combining a visit to the festival with a walk through the hills and villages of the Mugello.
From July 31 to August 6, 2026, Sagginale hosts its traditional Tortello Festival, organized by the Circolo Bianco Rosso at the sports field on Via Ponte d'Annibale. Once again this year, the star is the Mugello-style tortello, the large fresh pasta ravioli filled with potatoes and served with ragù, accompanied by Florentine steak and grilled meats. A genuine and convivial village festival, at the gates of Borgo San Lorenzo and Florence.
The event takes place over seven consecutive evenings, from July 31 to August 6, 2026, under the marquees of the Sagginale sports field.
The detailed evening schedule (including any dance nights or entertainment) will be announced by the Circolo Bianco Rosso organizers closer to the event.
