The widespread summer festival of the Municipality of Scandicci
Scandicci Open City is the summer festival of the Municipality of Scandicci, located in the metropolitan area of Florence, Tuscany. For over three months, from June to September, the event offers more than 130 appointments including theatre, music, cinema, dance, performances, art, and meetings, spread across dozens of different locations: town squares, parks, historic villas, social clubs, parish churches, and rural courtyards on the hills. It is a grassroots festival, the result of a collaboration between the municipal administration and a dense network of local cultural associations.
The main stage is located in Piazza Matteotti, in the centre of Scandicci, where big names in music, theatre, and comedy take the stage. Highly anticipated events include the Rino Gaetano Band concert, tributes by the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina (ranging from the great 80s and Broadway hits to a Coldplay tribute), and the comedy of Giobbe Covatta with "Cantanapoli", alongside the musical theatre of Maria Cassi and Leonardo Brizzi.
The Castello dell'Acciaiolo, with its Pomario, is one of the most vibrant hubs: it hosts the contemporary dance of the Festival Nutida, the OpenCine summer cinema arena with open-air screenings several nights a week, family shows, and the musical "Romeo and Juliet". There is no shortage of events spread across the Scandicci hills: classical music concerts at Villa di Vico, jazz in the farmhouses, choirs in the parish churches, and the theatre, dance, and storytelling festival at Parco di Poggio Valicaia.
Alongside the shows, Open City offers travelling and site-specific projects that bring art and performance into the city's everyday spaces, from neighbourhood gardens to tram stops. The festival is sponsored by the Tuscany Region and supported by the Metropolitan City of Florence, with the help of local sponsors. The result is a widespread cultural summer designed to involve residents and visitors in every corner of Scandicci.
The 2026 edition of Scandicci Open City offers over 130 events from June 1st to September 20th, involving 24 local associations. The Piazza Matteotti stage hosts the Rino Gaetano Band, tributes by the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina, and the comedy of Giobbe Covatta, while the Pomario of the Castello dell'Acciaiolo welcomes the contemporary dance of the Festival Nutida and the OpenCine cinema arena. The program is completed by concerts on the hills, the Materia electronic music festival, family events like Luglio Bambino, and numerous travelling projects. The edition's visual identity pays tribute to illustrator Roberto Innocenti.
Scandicci is connected to the centre of Florence by the T1 tram line, with frequent services reaching the city centre in a few minutes. By car, take the Firenze-Scandicci exit from the Firenze-Pisa-Livorno (FI-PI-LI) highway. Events take place in various locations: it is advisable to check the program for the venue of each appointment.
Many events are free of charge; some shows may require a ticket or reservation. The full program, venues, and access details are published on the official website scandicciopencity.it.
