About Open City Scandicci

Scandicci Open City is the major summer festival hosted by the Municipality of Scandicci, just outside Florence. From June to September, over 130 free or low-cost events bring squares, parks, villas, social clubs, and hills to life with theatre, music, open-air cinema, contemporary dance, performances, art, and talks. It is a widespread, participatory program built in collaboration with local associations, transforming the entire city into an open-air stage throughout the summer.

A city-wide summer festival

Scandicci Open City is the summer festival of the Municipality of Scandicci, located in the metropolitan area of Florence, Tuscany. For over three months, from June to September, the event offers more than 130 appointments including theatre, music, cinema, dance, performances, art, and meetings, spread across dozens of different locations: town squares, parks, historic villas, social clubs, parish churches, and rural courtyards on the hills. It is a grassroots festival, the result of a collaboration between the municipal administration and a dense network of local cultural associations.

The heart in Piazza Matteotti

The main stage is located in Piazza Matteotti, in the centre of Scandicci, where big names in music, theatre, and comedy take the stage. Highly anticipated events include the Rino Gaetano Band concert, tributes by the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina (ranging from the great 80s and Broadway hits to a Coldplay tribute), and the comedy of Giobbe Covatta with "Cantanapoli", alongside the musical theatre of Maria Cassi and Leonardo Brizzi.

Cinema, dance, and music in historic settings

The Castello dell'Acciaiolo, with its Pomario, is one of the most vibrant hubs: it hosts the contemporary dance of the Festival Nutida, the OpenCine summer cinema arena with open-air screenings several nights a week, family shows, and the musical "Romeo and Juliet". There is no shortage of events spread across the Scandicci hills: classical music concerts at Villa di Vico, jazz in the farmhouses, choirs in the parish churches, and the theatre, dance, and storytelling festival at Parco di Poggio Valicaia.

  • Materia Festival: twelve hours of electronic music with international sets on the hills
  • Scandicci Sounds at Anello di San Giusto, featuring concerts by the Beat 15 association
  • Open Ring at Circolo ARCI Le Bagnese, with free-entry concerts
  • Events for children and families: Luglio Bambino in the library, the Su-sultò festival, and theatre at the Pomario

A city that tells its story

Alongside the shows, Open City offers travelling and site-specific projects that bring art and performance into the city's everyday spaces, from neighbourhood gardens to tram stops. The festival is sponsored by the Tuscany Region and supported by the Metropolitan City of Florence, with the help of local sponsors. The result is a widespread cultural summer designed to involve residents and visitors in every corner of Scandicci.

Open City Scandicci — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of Scandicci Open City offers over 130 events from June 1st to September 20th, involving 24 local associations.
