The German Christmas market in Piazza Santa Croce, in the heart of Florence
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
For over twenty years, as the festive season approaches, Piazza Santa Croce in Florence has hosted the Weihnachtsmarkt, the famous German Christmas Market that has become one of the most beloved traditions of the Florentine Advent. At the foot of the majestic Basilica of Santa Croce, one of the most scenic squares in the city of Florence fills with over fifty illuminated wooden chalets, recreating the warm and intimate atmosphere of the great markets of Central and Northern Europe.
Exhibitors arrive from Germany, Austria, South Tyrol, and various Northern European countries, alongside Italian artisans. Among the stalls, you will find Christmas ornaments, nativity scenes, candles, ceramics, wooden objects, textiles, accessories, and handmade gift ideas. It is an opportunity to rediscover the care of craftsmanship and the authentic anticipation of Christmas, far from commercial frenzy.
The delicious heart of the market is its gastronomic offering. You can sample pretzels, apple strudel, dark bread, würstel and grilled sausages, sauerkraut, traditional sweets, spices, and alpine specialties, all accompanied by steaming mulled wine and Bavarian beers. The scents that fill the square are an integral part of the experience, in a setting that blends German culinary tradition with the magic of the historic center of Florence.
The Weihnachtsmarkt is not just about shopping and food: near the Basilica, a Santa Claus House is set up, featuring games and activities dedicated to children. The program also includes entertainment, creative workshops, Christmas carols, and live musical performances on weekends, as well as the charity initiatives that have always accompanied the event.
Organized by Confesercenti, ANVA, and the Florence Chamber of Commerce, the market in Piazza Santa Croce is the hub of Christmas in the city and is part of a wider calendar of events that bring Florence and Tuscany to life during the holidays. Admission is free and its central location makes it easily accessible on foot for anyone visiting the UNESCO World Heritage historic center. An unmissable stop to experience the Christmas spirit in the streets of the Tuscan capital.
The 2026 edition of the German Christmas Market in Florence is expected to take place in Piazza Santa Croce, following the usual format with over fifty wooden chalets dedicated to handicrafts, Christmas decorations, and Central European culinary specialties. At the moment, the precise dates have not yet been officially announced by the organizers and are provided on a provisional basis. As every year, the Santa Claus House, children's entertainment, and musical moments are also expected. The detailed program will be published closer to the holidays.
