About Weihnachtsmarkt Florence

Every year, during the weeks of Advent, Piazza Santa Croce is transformed into a Christmas village featuring over fifty wooden chalets: this is the Weihnachtsmarkt, Florence's historic German Christmas market. With its array of handicrafts, decorations, and the enticing aromas of mulled wine, pretzels, and strudel, exhibitors from Germany, Austria, Tyrol, and Northern Europe bring the atmosphere of great Central European markets to the center of the Tuscan capital. Free admission, a Santa Claus house for children, and Christmas carols complete the experience.

The German Christmas market in the heart of Florence

For over twenty years, as the festive season approaches, Piazza Santa Croce in Florence has hosted the Weihnachtsmarkt, the famous German Christmas Market that has become one of the most beloved traditions of the Florentine Advent. At the foot of the majestic Basilica of Santa Croce, one of the most scenic squares in the city of Florence fills with over fifty illuminated wooden chalets, recreating the warm and intimate atmosphere of the great markets of Central and Northern Europe.

Handicrafts and Central European tradition

Exhibitors arrive from Germany, Austria, South Tyrol, and various Northern European countries, alongside Italian artisans. Among the stalls, you will find Christmas ornaments, nativity scenes, candles, ceramics, wooden objects, textiles, accessories, and handmade gift ideas. It is an opportunity to rediscover the care of craftsmanship and the authentic anticipation of Christmas, far from commercial frenzy.

The flavors of a German Christmas

The delicious heart of the market is its gastronomic offering. You can sample pretzels, apple strudel, dark bread, würstel and grilled sausages, sauerkraut, traditional sweets, spices, and alpine specialties, all accompanied by steaming mulled wine and Bavarian beers. The scents that fill the square are an integral part of the experience, in a setting that blends German culinary tradition with the magic of the historic center of Florence.

For families and children

The Weihnachtsmarkt is not just about shopping and food: near the Basilica, a Santa Claus House is set up, featuring games and activities dedicated to children. The program also includes entertainment, creative workshops, Christmas carols, and live musical performances on weekends, as well as the charity initiatives that have always accompanied the event.

A staple of the Florentine winter

Organized by Confesercenti, ANVA, and the Florence Chamber of Commerce, the market in Piazza Santa Croce is the hub of Christmas in the city and is part of a wider calendar of events that bring Florence and Tuscany to life during the holidays. Admission is free and its central location makes it easily accessible on foot for anyone visiting the UNESCO World Heritage historic center. An unmissable stop to experience the Christmas spirit in the streets of the Tuscan capital.
