The historic open-air cinema in the Oltrarno, where you can watch films under the stars
When summer arrives and indoor theaters close for the seasonal break, cinema in Florence doesn't stop: it moves outdoors. Chiardiluna, located at the corner of Via Monte Oliveto and Viale Aleardi, is the most historic and popular summer arena in the Oltrarno, in the heart of the Municipality of Florence. For decades, it has accompanied the summer evenings of the San Frediano district and has become, for many Florentines, the quintessential place to watch a film under the city sky.
The Chiardiluna season opens in June and continues until mid-September, with a daily schedule that alternates between the season's biggest hits, the best of Italian and European cinema, and a selection of previews. It is not just an open-air theater: it is a meeting place where the atmosphere remains simple and authentic, with a bar offering snacks and light meals, numbered seating, and the chance to spend the entire evening immersed in greenery.
One of Chiardiluna's distinctive features is the presence of guests who meet the audience before the screening: Italian film directors and actors regularly take the stage at the arena to present their films. Over the years, the Florentine arena has hosted well-known names in national cinema, making every evening something more than just a simple viewing.
The location of Chiardiluna is one of its strengths: you are in the Oltrarno, the left bank of the Arno that preserves the most popular and artisanal soul of Florence, the capital of Tuscany. After the film, you can continue the evening among the trattorias and bars of San Frediano and Santo Spirito, two of the city's most vibrant neighborhoods. For those visiting Florence in summer, an evening at the arena is a different and relaxed way to experience the city, far from the crowds of the museums.
Chiardiluna 2026 raised the curtain on Thursday, June 11, with the screening of Cinque secondi, the film by Paolo Virzì starring Valerio Mastandrea, Galatea Bellugi, and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi. The season continues every night until mid-September in the heart of the Florentine Oltrarno.
As every year, the programming alternates between the most anticipated titles of the season, Italian and European auteur cinema, and a selection of previews, with the usual presence of guests meeting the audience before the screening.
Screenings continue every night from June 11 until mid-September. The schedule alternates between the season's biggest hits, Italian and European cinema, previews, and meetings with directors and actors. Arena and bar open at 8:30 PM, screenings start at 9:30 PM.
The detailed day-by-day program is updated on the official website and the theater's online ticketing system.
