The major widespread summer festival of the Municipality of Prato
Every year, from late spring until autumn, Prato Estate transforms the capital of the Province of Prato into a vast, widespread cultural program. Promoted by the Municipality of Prato, the festival features over one hundred events ranging from cinema to theater, concerts to dance, as well as workshops for children, literary presentations, and exhibitions. It is one of the richest summer cultural offerings in Tuscany, designed to accompany residents and visitors throughout the beautiful season.
The beauty of Prato Estate lies in its itinerant nature: events are not concentrated in a single space but span the entire city, from the historic heart to the suburbs. Among the most evocative venues, you will find the Castello dell'Imperatore, a Swabian fortress that hosts the summer film arena, the Corte delle Sculture of the Lazzerini Library, the Giardino Buonamici, the Chiostro di San Domenico, Palazzo Datini, and the green area of the Polo Campolmi. The city's major museums also take the stage: the Luigi Pecci Center for Contemporary Art, the Museo di Palazzo Pretorio, the Textile Museum, and the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo.
The philosophy of the event is that of the widespread city: bringing quality performances and culture even to clubs and the most peripheral neighborhoods, ensuring no area is left out. The program weaves together historic festivals and new offerings: from the independent cinema of the Toscana Film Makers Festival to the Viaccia Festival, from jazz evenings at the Giardino Buonamici to open-air theater performances, and even stand-up comedy marathons and singer-songwriter concerts.
One of the hallmarks of Prato Estate is that it is free of charge: almost all events are open to the public until capacity is reached, with only a few paid exceptions. It is the perfect opportunity to discover the cultural vibrancy of Prato, a textile city with an ancient heart and a multicultural soul, in an informal atmosphere accessible to everyone.
The 2026 program of Prato Estate confirms the widespread city formula with over one hundred events, mostly free, distributed from late May to the beginning of October. Cinema, theater, music, dance, children's workshops, and exhibitions enliven the Castello dell'Imperatore, the Corte delle Sculture, the Giardino Buonamici, Palazzo Datini, the Chiostro di San Domenico, and the main city museums.
The edition features well-established festivals: the film arena at the Castello dell'Imperatore (until September), the Toscana Film Makers Festival now in its eleventh edition, the Viaccia Festival (fourteenth edition), the Festival delle Colline, and the evenings of Buonamici Jazz and Buonamici Sunday Session in the historic garden.
The complete day-by-day program is published on the Cartellone Eventi portal of the Municipality of Prato.
Prato is easily reachable by train: the Prato Centrale station is on the Florence-Bologna line, just a few minutes from Florence. By car, the Prato Est or Prato Ovest exits on the A11 Firenze-Mare motorway lead quickly to the center.
Events take place in multiple locations in the historic center and the neighborhoods (Castello dell'Imperatore, Corte delle Sculture, Giardino Buonamici, Chiostro di San Domenico, city museums). Check the venue for each individual appointment on the official program.
Most events are free and open to the public until capacity is reached; reservations are required for some appointments. Full program on pratoestate.it and on the Cartellone Eventi portal of the Municipality of Prato.
