About Maundy Thursday Sacred Representation

Every Maundy Thursday, Marsala relives one of Italy's oldest sacred representations: hundreds of actors in period costumes bring the living tableaux of the Passion of Christ to life along the streets of the historic center. Organized by the Confraternity of Sant'Anna and dating back to the 17th century, the procession of the Living Groups winds through the squares and churches of this town in the province of Trapani, watched by thousands of spectators. A solemn pageant that weaves together faith, popular theater, and collective memory, standing as one of the most deeply felt rites of the Sicilian Holy Week.

The Maundy Thursday Sacred Representation in Marsala

Every Maundy Thursday, the historic center of Marsala, in the province of Trapani, transforms into a grand open-air stage. The Sacred Representation of the Passion of the Lord โ€” known to locals as the procession of the Living Mysteries or Living Groups โ€” brings hundreds of costumed actors to the city streets, reenacting the final hours of Christ's life. It is one of the oldest and most defining rites of Holy Week in Sicily.

A tradition born in the 17th century

The origins of the representation date back to the first half of the 17th century. As early as 1620, under the guidance of the Jesuits, students began staging sacred tragedies, and by 1635, the custom of performing the Passion of Christ in churches and confraternities had spread throughout Marsala. The Confraternity of Sant'Anna, founded in the early 1600s, became the driving force behind the procession: in 1675, the Camillian Fathers enriched the event with new groups. After a period of decline following the suppression of religious orders in 1866, the tradition saw a revival when Sant'Anna became a parish in 1920. In 2013, Bishop Domenico Mogavero bestowed upon it the current title of Sacred Representation of the Passion of the Lord.

The living tableaux of the Passion

The procession is structured into approximately eight groups that recount, like a moving Via Crucis, the most dramatic moments of the Passion:

  • The Palio โ€” the banner with the cross, accompanied by trumpeters and drummers;
  • Christ with the Apostles and the Last Supper;
  • The Arrest of Jesus, with Judas, the soldiers, and Peter;
  • Christ before Herod and his court;
  • Ecce Homo โ€” Christ before Pilate and the flagellation;
  • The Via Crucis, with Christ carrying the cross, Veronica, and the thieves;
  • The Dead Christ and the Mater Dolorosa, in a final funeral cortege.

All participants wear Judeo-Roman inspired costumes and traverse the main streets of the center amidst a silent crowd, creating an atmosphere of profound religious and emotional intensity.

Faith, popular theater, and local identity

More than just a ritual, the Sacred Representation is a collective narrative in which the Marsala community recognizes itself. The actors โ€” from all walks of life โ€” are recruited from among the parishioners, with registration opening weeks in advance at the Confraternity's headquarters. The event, which is free and open to all, draws thousands of spectators and visitors, becoming one of the most important fixtures in the Western Sicilian Easter calendar, alongside the rites of nearby Trapani.

Maundy Thursday Sacred Representation โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Sacred Representation took place on Thursday, April 2, starting at 1:00 PM and returning at 7:00 PM. For the first time, the procession did not depart from the Church of Sant'Anna โ€” which was undergoing PNRR renovation work โ€” but from the Church of Maria SS. Ausiliatrice (the Salesians). Hundreds of actors brought the living tableaux to life along the streets of Marsala's historic center before thousands of spectators, under a cloudy and occasionally rainy sky.

The 2026 procession of the Living Mysteries departed at 1:00 PM from the Church of Maria SS. Ausiliatrice (Salesians), on Via Don Bosco, replacing the traditional Church of Sant'Anna, which was closed for PNRR works. This was the first time in recent history that the procession did not start from Sant'Anna.

2026 Itinerary

Via Don Bosco, Via Crispi, Piazza F. Pizzo, Via Mazzini, Piazza del Popolo, Via Vespri, Piazza Mameli, Via Garibaldi, Via XI Maggio, Piazza Matteotti, Via Roma, Via M. Nuccio, Via Cavour, returning to Via Don Bosco.

The day was marked by bad weather: rain affected the procession, which was organized as every year by the Confraternity of Sant'Anna.
