Living Mysteries in the streets of Marsala on Maundy Thursday
Every Maundy Thursday, the historic center of Marsala, in the province of Trapani, transforms into a grand open-air stage. The Sacred Representation of the Passion of the Lord โ known to locals as the procession of the Living Mysteries or Living Groups โ brings hundreds of costumed actors to the city streets, reenacting the final hours of Christ's life. It is one of the oldest and most defining rites of Holy Week in Sicily.
The origins of the representation date back to the first half of the 17th century. As early as 1620, under the guidance of the Jesuits, students began staging sacred tragedies, and by 1635, the custom of performing the Passion of Christ in churches and confraternities had spread throughout Marsala. The Confraternity of Sant'Anna, founded in the early 1600s, became the driving force behind the procession: in 1675, the Camillian Fathers enriched the event with new groups. After a period of decline following the suppression of religious orders in 1866, the tradition saw a revival when Sant'Anna became a parish in 1920. In 2013, Bishop Domenico Mogavero bestowed upon it the current title of Sacred Representation of the Passion of the Lord.
The procession is structured into approximately eight groups that recount, like a moving Via Crucis, the most dramatic moments of the Passion:
All participants wear Judeo-Roman inspired costumes and traverse the main streets of the center amidst a silent crowd, creating an atmosphere of profound religious and emotional intensity.
More than just a ritual, the Sacred Representation is a collective narrative in which the Marsala community recognizes itself. The actors โ from all walks of life โ are recruited from among the parishioners, with registration opening weeks in advance at the Confraternity's headquarters. The event, which is free and open to all, draws thousands of spectators and visitors, becoming one of the most important fixtures in the Western Sicilian Easter calendar, alongside the rites of nearby Trapani.
The 2026 procession of the Living Mysteries departed at 1:00 PM from the Church of Maria SS. Ausiliatrice (Salesians), on Via Don Bosco, replacing the traditional Church of Sant'Anna, which was closed for PNRR works. This was the first time in recent history that the procession did not start from Sant'Anna.

The day was marked by bad weather: rain affected the procession, which was organized as every year by the Confraternity of Sant'Anna.
