Ferragosto in the Egadi is the most anticipated summer event in Favignana, the main town of the largest archipelago in the Mediterranean, located in the municipality of the same name in the Province of Trapani, Sicily. In the heart of mid-August, the island fills with vacationers, and the local administration organizes festive evenings that, combined with the religious tradition of the Assumption, make this week one of the liveliest moments of the Egadi summer.
The spiritual heart of the festivities is the procession in honor of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which takes place on August 15th through the fishing village. The statue of the Madonna is carried from the Mother Church (Chiesa Matrice) to the pier, where the traditional casting of a floral wreath into the sea takes place—a gesture of devotion reflecting a community that has always looked to the sea. In the Egadi Islands, the Assumption remains deeply rooted in local culture, with processions and moving moments of reflection also held on the nearby islands of Levanzo and Marettimo.
Alongside the religious dimension, the Municipality of Favignana hosts various musical evenings, typically from August 14th to 16th, which bring Piazza Madrice and other central spaces to life. The program alternates between live concerts, cover bands, tributes to Italian music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, and DJ sets that transform the squares into open-air dance floors under the stars.
Visiting Favignana during Ferragosto means combining festivities with the discovery of one of the most beautiful places in Western Sicily: famous coves with crystal-clear waters like Cala Rossa and Cala Azzurra, the former Florio tuna fishery, and boat excursions to Levanzo and Marettimo. It is a simple, popular event, deeply tied to the maritime identity of the archipelago and the Marian devotion of the Trapani territory.
The 2026 edition of Ferragosto in the Egadi Islands in Favignana, in the Province of Trapani, is expected to follow the usual mid-August tradition. As of today, the Municipality of Favignana has not yet published the exact dates or the artistic program for the 2026 edition.
Based on previous years, the festivities are expected to take place around August 14th-16th, with the procession of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on August 15th and several musical evenings in Piazza Madrice. The calendar of events and the artists will be announced by the municipal administration in the weeks leading up to the event.
Favignana can be reached by ferries and hydrofoils departing from Trapani (port) and Marsala, with frequent connections especially in the summer months. From Trapani, the hydrofoil takes about 30 minutes. The nearest airport is Trapani-Birgi.
The festivities traditionally take place around August 14th-16th, with the Assumption procession held on August 15th.
Ferragosto is the peak tourist season on the island: it is highly recommended to book accommodation and ferry tickets well in advance. All events in the square are free to attend. On the island, it is best to get around on foot, by bicycle, or by renting electric vehicles.
